Jorge Costa: There were gestures calling Serge Kevyn 'a monkey'

The Mumbai City head coach took a moment to talk about his displeasure for racist gestures aimed at the Gabonese midfielder by the referee.

It was a Super Sunday by name and the game on the day stood true to the epithet, as Mumbai City FC pipped Bengaluru FC with another match being decided by a goal in the final moments. Following the win, Mumbai City head coach Jorge Costa interacted with the media in the post-match press conference, where he made some shocking claims.

Jorge Costa rejoiced at having got three precious points, their first win since their opening game of the season. He praised the efforts from his team saying, "I'm very happy. We played well in the first half, showed good quality and got the first goal. We missed a penalty in the last seconds and sometimes in football when you play the second half with 0-2, it is much easier. We had a difficult game and we were a bit lucky. But, I'm happy with the work that the players put in."

"We didn't change anything. We must work to understand the good things in the opposition. We were almost perfect in the first half, if (Mohammed) Larbi had scored, it would've been perfect. We won because of our quality and also because we work a lot and the players believe in each other," the Portuguese tactician added.

Jorge Costa took a moment to inform the journalists regarding what he claimed were racist, monkey gestures aimed at Mumbai City's Gabonese midfielder Serge Kevyn from the match referee.

"The ISL needs foreigners and I'm talking about the respect that the foreign players and coaches deserve. We have come here and are here to work and to try and make the league better. The quality is there, but respect must be there. Today, there was no respect to one player, Serge Kevyn. In the game, the referee made some gestures towards him, calling him a monkey," he revealed.

Mumbai City FC are currently sixth on the table with 10 points and in striking distance of the playoffs spots They will  play against Jamshedpur FC in a potential playoff spot encounter in their next match.
