The midfielder has been with Los Blancos since 2014.

German World Cup-winning midfielder and the one vital cog in Zinedine Zidane's Real Madrid side, Toni Kroos has signed a contract extension keeping him at the Santiago Bernabeu till 2023.

The 29-year old was tied down to a contract with Real Madrid till 2022 but the board and Zidane decided to extend his stay at the Spanish capital.

It has been a great spell at Spain from Kroos after joining from Bayern Munich back in 2014. He has won everything that is on offer for the Los Blancos and has been a crucial player in the heart of their midfield while their domination in Europe.

Real said in an official statement: “Real Madrid CF and Toni Kroos have agreed to extend the player's contract, which is now linked to the club until June 30, 2023.”

While there will be a lot of changes to the squad this summer, there were doubts over the German midfielder's future at the club. There were reports that suggested that the 29-year old may move out of the Spanish capital in their period of transition. Zidane who considers Kroos as a crucial player in his squad also had his doubts over the future of the midfielder.

Zinedine Zidane was pretty clear with his doubts way back in April and how much he wants the German to stay at his side while the Los Blancos go through an overhaul this season.

Zidane said, "Toni is a key player. He's been in Madrid five years and has done great things. He's a great player that brings calm. I've always liked him."

“Everyone talks about Toni, and other players, in terms of whether I want them or not. Every player is good and important. There will be changes but not right now, at the end of the season.”

Although the whole team underperformed this season and Toni Kroos was not an exception to criticism, still Zidane feels that he can build a team around the 29-year old. He has been a vital cog in his triple Champions League triumph and hence the Frenchman considers Kroos to be a very important member of the squad with the club going into transition next season."

Real Madrid ended their campaign on a sorry note with a 2-0 defeat against Real Betis. The Los Blancos could only manage 68 points in their La Liga campaign bringing an end to one of their worst seasons.
