The former Blaugrana midfielder is the newest league icon after Iker Casillas.

In a LaLiga event in Tokyo, Japan, Andrés Iniesta has been named the latest ‘LaLiga Icon’, a LaLiga initiative to continue growing worldwide driven by the popularity of players like the FC Barcelona legend.

The 35-year-old currently playing his football in Japan becomes the newest star to be named a ‘LaLiga Icon’ after his Spanish teammate Iker Casillas.

“We are delighted to have Andrés Iniesta on board as a LaLiga Icon” said LaLiga President, Javier Tebas. “He is a player than inspires millions and is a fantastic representative for what LaLiga stands for across the globe.”

The LaLiga Icons initiative aims to expand the LaLiga brand through a strategy focused on digital dissemination, maximising LaLiga content and taking advantage of synergies between social networks, allowing LaLiga to connect with fans globally.

Also in attendance at the presentation gala held in the Japanese capital, Tokyo were Fernando Sanz, Director of Institutional Relations and LaLiga Ambassadors programme and Samuel Eto’o, a former teammate of Iniesta’s at FC Barcelona and current LaLiga Ambassador.

Talking about the ongoing transfer activities of his former club, he said at the event to Sport English, "He's(Griezmann) got the quality and knows LaLiga - and his new teammates - really well. He's got everything to do really well. He'll be surrounded by better players and everything suggests his time at the club will be very positive."

And as far as signing Neymar is concerned, Iniesta said, "I don't know if he'll return, it looks like he might, but I don't know if there's real interest or not. For me, Neymar is one of the best players around and we'll have to see what happens."

Bidding adieu, Iniesta pointed out the signing of young Japanese players by Real Madrid and FC Barcelona is going to reap fruits for the nation. He said, "Both have a lot of very good characteristics. They've gone to Barça and Madrid because they're good enough. Quality players are good enough to play in any league."
