Similar clause saw Xavi leaving for Qatar in 2015 and Iniesta for Japan in 2018.

El Pais journalist Ramon Besa recently reported that the latest deal that Lionel Messi signed with FC Barcelona in 2017 has a secret clause that dictates that he can leave the club on June 30th every year.

The Argentine sensation has spent his entire career with the Catalan club, winning everything that club football has in offer multiple times and has penned eight deals since joining the first team in 2005. Barcelona have always protected their prized asset and have never failed to offer him the contract he deserves.

His current contract expires in June 2021 and Barcelona President Josep Bartomeu is hopeful about tying down yet another contract with Leo. Back in April, he suggested that the club was looking for ways to extend Messi’s current contract.

"We would like to renew his contract, that's the idea. He is young - you can see that - and he still has two years on his deal," he told ESPN.

"He's always improving, always innovating. I believe he still has many years in front of him and in the coming months we will sit down with him so that he has many more years at Barcelona."

"Messi is a one-club man. It's more than what he does on the pitch - his relationship with Barca will last forever. I use the example of Pele, who was always at Santos. We want Messi to always be at Barca, whether that's playing or linked to the club."

"We want him to have a really long career so we can keep on enjoying him. Lionel's managed to break down borders. Everyone admires him and he's applauded at other stadiums by rival fans.”

Messi’s Barcelona teammate Gerard Pique also claimed that he is aware of the existence of the clause but he is not worried since he believes that Messi has still a lot to offer to the club. "I already knew Messi is able to leave for free at the end of each season," the defender told Cadena SER.

"But we all know the commitment Leo has to Barca and it doesn't worry me at all. He's earned the right to be able to choose what he does with his future after everything he's given the club."

Similar clauses were offered to Barcelona legends Carles Puyol, Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta. The clause, however, dictates that the player in question cannot join any other European club. This saw Xavi leaving for Al Sadd in Qatar in 2015 and Iniesta playing for Vissel Kobe in Japan in 2018.

Messi had previously expressed interest in returning to Argentina to play for his boyhood club Newell’s Old Boys but situations have changed since then and the tension, disturbance and corruption back home is worrying.

Also, his family is well settled in Barcelona and he might not be willing to uproot them from the luxury of the Spanish city.

Messi hasn’t seen a single minute of action this season owing to injury and Barcelona have struggled without him. Registering only one win in three Liga games, this might just be an ominous foreboding on life after Messi for the Catalan club who are desperate to hold on to their crown jewel.
