The reigning champions lost their first game in the league so far this season.
Paris Saint Germain fell to their first defeat of the season in the league on Sunday as Lyon came from behind to take all three points. Angel Di Maria slotted in the first goal but a header from Moussa Dembele and a penalty from Nabil Fekir meant that Thomas Tuchel’s side returned to Paris empty-handed.
The Brazilian international, Neymar has been ruled out for 10 weeks following a recurrence of the metatarsal injury that kept him out of action for a substantial part of the last campaign. The 26-year-old hobbled off the pitch in PSG’s Coupe De France tie against Strasbourg.
With a crucial Champions League tie against Manchester United approaching, Tuchel remains confident that his side can cope without its talisman.
“I do not know it we missed them but it’s clear that we do not have a second Neymar or a second [Marco] Verratti, but I have full confidence in the other players,” he said.
“There were a lot of chances on the line with Angel and [Julian] Draxler who made a very good match.
“We were too passive after our first goal, we lacked precision, we made bad decisions. Lyon played with a lot of quality, but I liked our second period.”
Manchester United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was in the stands in Lyon and will no doubt have been encouraged by what he saw. The Red Devils are unbeaten in their last 10 games under their new manager and are looking like an increasingly tricky prospect for the Parisians.
United have won five consecutive away matches for the first time since 2012 and look to have finally found their rhythm, with the likes of Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba finding their feet under the new boss.
Tuchel will be hoping that the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Angel Di Maria who will be returning to the club where he has such a torrid season will be able to guide his side in the absence of Neymar who was crucial for PSG in the group stages, scoring five goals as they topped a tough group containing Liverpool, Napoli and Red Star Belgrade.
