The Spanish tactician penned down the reason behind his departure through a column in the Athletic.
Months after leaving Newcastle United, Rafa Benitez has stated that he simply did not trust club owner Mike Ashley. Currently in China with Chinese Super League club Dalian Yifang, the manager is earning twice than what he was paid at the Magpies and Rafa has insisted it majorly were the trust issues which led him to his departure.
The managing director of the club, Lee Charnley, said in a matchday programme on Sunday that they did their best to persuade him to stay but were unable to match the £12m offer from Dalian Yifang. He claimed that it was all about money for Benitez.
Replying to these claims, Benitez said in The Athletic that allotted budget was not enough for a top-10 finish in the Premier League and that he was asked to give up some of his control over transfers.
"I’ve encouraged supporters to get behind Steve Bruce and his new team — but I’ve been made aware of what Lee Charnley, Newcastle’s managing director, claimed in the club’s match programme last weekend and I think it’s important I address that," Benitez said.
