The Minerva boss praised his team's character after a draw against reigning champions Bengaluru...

The Punjab gaffer was pleased after he saw his side earn a crucial draw at the home of the champions Bengaluru FC. In a cagey affair, the visitors saw themselves a goal behind after halftime, but pulled one back when Kamalpreet Singh’s cross was deflected by Sandesh Jhingan into his own net.

“We defended very well. We played well in the second half and got the goal. I am very pleased with the performance of the boys,” said Surinder at the post match press conference.

The team from the north have had a rough start to the season with heavy defeats at the hand of both Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan and East Bengal before they have embarked on an impressive which has seen them take 5 points out of a possible 9.

Singh acknowledged that his team focussed on getting their defensive unit in order and this was a key reason behind their revival.

“We had a problem with our back 4 in the early part of the season. We managed to get Karim back into the team and his partnership with Loveday has been important for us. Arashpreet and Kamalpreet had a very good game today. When you defend well, we can think about scoring more goals,” opined the gaffer.

Surinder felt that the draw at the home of the champions could serve to be a confidence booster for his budding team for the rest of the season.

The Punjab coach took time to praise his young midfielder Anirudh Thapa who was an unfazed presence in the Punjab midfield.

“Yes he played very well and he was very confident in the field during both defending and attacking. No doubt the pressure was on our midfielders today when you are competing against the likes of Chhetri, Vineeth, Watson, Udanta and Eugeneson who played well today. Anirudh and the other midfielders had a good game today,” said Singh.

He also praised the fans of Bengaluru FC and commented on his team’s decision to unfurl a banner paying tribute to the West Block Blues prior to kickoff.

“Yes they are a very good set of fans and they understand football. They turn up for every game and support their team with passion. Our owner Ranjit wanted to show his appreciation to them and that’s why we made the banner,” signed off Surinder.
