Both coaches had kind words for the Indian girls' gameplay in the final of the tournament.

Sweden defeated India in the final of the U-17 Women's Football Tournament at the Mumbai Football Arena on Thursday evening. The Swedish girls emerged victorious by a margin of 0-4, as the hosts looked no match for them in the entirety of the game. Following the match, Par Lagerstrom (Sweden) and Thomas Dennerby (India) addressed the media in the post-match press conference.

“First of all, our preparations before the first game cannot be compared to this," Par Lagerstrom said before adding, "We adapted to the climate. We were able to be a bit more focussed in the whole game, both in the defense and offense. We were good, we can be better than this. We played from average to very good from the first minute to 90 minutes. We didn’t really have dip in the performances (sic.)."

The Sweden U-17 women's head coach was asked whether the time advantage that they had in comparison with India was beneficial, considering they had an extra day’s break.

“I actually don’t think that. We played an unofficial game against Kenkre FC. We have played four games so far. It was the same time as the India-Thailand game as well. I think both the teams were prepared. The players (Swedish) worked really hard the whole week. Behind the team too, the physios and everyone worked really hard (sic.)," Par Lagerstrom remarked.

Regarding the Indian team, Par Lagerstrom remarked, “The positives are that when you see them play, I see players in the team who are very skillful, the wingers, very good defenders, very good captain. I think that’s very good. It is important to find those key players, those successful players.”

Par Lagerstrom On Negatives Of India

Asked regarding the negatives of the hosts, Par Lagerstrom answered, “For them, the difference between the best player and the player who is not there yet is too big. That will change when they find more players.”

The Swedish girls had scored three goals in the first 20 minutes itself against India in the final of the tournament. When asked whether that handed them an advantage, the coach answered, “Yes, I have always said that it is important to start the game well and to finish well. But, in the final it set the standard for us. On the other hand, the Indian team had some troubles in the beginning and it’s up to the team to earn something from that. We saw some weakness in them and we were able to score, so that’s a good thing.”

Thomas Dennerby

Later, Thomas Dennerby was quizzed about the positive takeaways from the tournament, ahead of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup next year.

“The most positive is that I think now we know, the players understand the level that we need to reach in 11 months. I think that’s a good lesson. We really did not give us a chance today. We did not play to our full potential,” Thomas Dennerby quipped.

The 60-year-old tactician's side played against Thailand just a day before the final of the tournament. He was asked about whether fatigue became the issue which affected his side eventually against Sweden in the final.

Thomas Dennerby On Sweden

“Yes, Sweden played four, because they played a league team two days ago when we were playing Thailand. You also need to know that Sweden are physically prepared for it. They have girls who have been playing in the league since they were 6-8 years old (sic.)," he quipped.

Thomas Dennerby further emphasized on the game and the tournament on the whole by stating, “The positive thing is that we are trying, we are not just putting long balls. Sometimes, they force us to do. The decision-making needs to be so good for that."

“We also saw some good players, soon good goalkeeping from Manju. There was good defending from Shilki. Martina played well over the course of three games. But, whatever we do, we need to do that a bit quicker,” he added.

About what he said to the players after the match, Thomas Dennerby revealed, “I told them that they are going home with a silver medal. They now know the level of teams that will come here in 11 months. But, I also want them to feel relaxed and not stressed.”
