Corps of Signals hit rock bottom after fourth defeat in five games…

Vasco Sports Club registered a comfortable 3-1 victory over Corps of Signals in the Goa Professional League match played at Duler Stadium earlier today. Corps coach L. T. Panchaua made four changes to his side as Niyas Mon, Ajay, Lairellakpam Sing and Rinjoy Fernades found their names in the starting XI. While Jaison Vaz and newly signed Nigerian striker Okorogr Praise were the two changes in the Vasco side. The Portside club was high on confidence after their last win against CSM Taleigao, while Corps have faced four straight loseses in the league after winning the first match against Calangute Association. Both the teams started the match on an attacking note but as it progressed Vasco were the better side. Vasco should have taken an early lead in the 12th minute when Abhil B found kipper Jaison in the box with a brilliant pass, but the striker failed to connect from close distance. Six minutes later Elivas Kanjirathinkal tried to find unmarked Jaison in the box but Corps defender Kuldeep Kumar cleared it before the striker could get it. In the 23rd minute Vasco took the lead when Rovan Pereira’s shot finished in the net after a well taken corner by Princeton Rebello. Three minutes later Vasco should have doubled their lead but Jaison Vaz’s strike was pushed for a corner by Signals keeper Niyas Mon. Few minutes later Kingslee Fernades’ shot from outside the box was parried by the Corps shot-stopper for a corner. However in the 33rd minute Okorogr combined well with Kingslee before blasting the ball into the Corps nylons, making it 2-0 for port side. Corps should have reduced the lead but U-20 Shubert Pereira shot wide from point blank range with only the keeper to beat. Vasco came out stronger in the second half and within five minutes marched on the rivals’ goal, but Okorogr’s shot was blocked by the Corps custodian. At the other end surprisingly Corps reduced the margin on 56 minutes, when Th Roshan Singh’s shot from 10 yards finished in the net past the keeper. Hardly had the cheers died down when Vasco made it 3-1 through Jaison Vaz’s goal off Okorogr’s lofted pass in the box. In injury time Vasco almost fired their fourth goal, but Corps defender Raj Singh came up with a goal line clearance to deny substitute Floyd Fernandes’s effort. Vasco coach was in mixed mood after the fulltime whistle as his striker Jaison Vaz who was playing after almost two months due to injury in the Goa Police Cup, was injured again and this time fractured his hand after scoring the third goal. “I was so happy because they played really good football today. But, my happiness faded when I got the news of Jaison’s fracture. After coming back from injury and scoring this is really heartbreaking” said the Vasco tactician. With this win Vasco moved to 6th position with 6 points from 4 matches while Corps will stay 9th in the league table with 3 points after playing 5 matches.
