Vasco beat Churchill Brothers in the Goa Pro League

Vasco Sports Club downed Churchill Brothers as they registered a hard fought 3-1 win in the Goa Professional League match played at Duler Stadium earlier today. The port side was high on confidence after winning their last two matches against CSM Taleigao and Corps of Signals, While Churchill Brothers are going through a tough time as they have lost three out of their last four matches and drawn one against Salgaocar FC. Striker Franck Kouassi was back in the Vasco starting XI replacing injured Jaison Vaz, after serving a one-match suspension because following his sending off against CSM Taleigao. While Churchill coach Alfred Fernandes named Basant Rai, Pankaj Sona and Biju Kumar in place of Caitano Viegas, Sagar Limbo and Sunveer Singh respectively, in the playing XI. In the very 1st minute Churchill’s Biju brought down Okorogr Praise, giving away a free-kick just outside the box. Okorogr gave Vasco an early lead with his curling shot. Within five minutes, the port side doubled their lead. This time with Frank’s strike from the edge of the box off Okorogr cross from the right flank. At the other end, Nash Pereira found Pankaj with a long ball in the box, but his shot was well blocked by Vasco keeper Shilton Fernandes. Churchill had the best opportunity to reduce the lead in the 28tth minute, when Nicholas Fernandes sent a brilliant cross to Delbert Fernandes but the U-20 striker failed to keep his placement on target. On 37 minutes, Okorogr tried to find Franck in the 18 yard box but Churchill shot-stopper cleared it. The Red Machines came back strongly in the second half. Churchill should have scored in the very 1st minute after resumption when Pankaj got hold of a pass from Nash but failed to keep his shot on target. Ten minutes later Vasco had a chance to boost their lead but Kingslee Fernandes’ shot missed the target by hairline distance. Churchill wasted another chance when a solo effort from Nicholas Fernandes was thwarted by Vasco keeper Shilton in a one-on-one. On the hour mark Nicholas sent a low cross to Pankaj in the box, who smartly tapped the ball in the net to make it 1-2 for the Benaulim side. In the 63rd minute Pankaj was a bit too late to connect off a cross from substitute Chesterpaul Lynhdoh, after keeper Shilton handled the ball clumsily. In the 79th minute Biju’s header off Basant Rai’s corner was denied by Vasco’s crossbar. In the dying minutes Churchill tried hard to find the equalizer but failed in the final-third when Nicholas’ shot was parried by the Vasco custodian for a corner. Vasco keeper Shilton was again in action when he made a diving save to deny Chesterpaul’s effort from 6-yards. While Churchill was busy finding the equalizer, Abhil B scored a 25-yard stunner in added time to make it 3-1 for the port side.Report by Khel Now Correspondent Ravish Narvekar from Goa .
