Spain announces 18-member squad for Men's Hockey World Cup

The Redsticks have a relatively young squad in terms of the number of caps.
The two-time finalist has released the 18-member squad for the 2023 FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup to be held in Odisha, India. The team is going in with a relatively young squad in terms of the number of caps but will look to put up a good fight. Igliasis Alvaro will be the highest-capped player to represent Spain followed by Gonzalez Enrique. Apart from the main squad, there will be two reserve players travelling with the team.
Spain is slated to take on the hosts India in the tournament opener and will play England and Wales from Group D. The Spanish side failed to advance to the knockouts in the 2018 edition and finished 13th overall. Currently, the side has played four matches in the Men’s Pro League winning and losing two matches each.

Spain in FIH Men’s World Cup:
Spain has reached the finals twice in 1971 and the 1998 editions and both times finished as runners-up. The inaugural edition of the world cup was hosted in Barcelona, Spain and went on to reach the finals losing to Pakistan. In the 1998 edition, Spain lost to the dominant Netherlands but did not lose a single match until the finals. The most recent success for the Spanish side came in the 2006 edition finishing third and since has put up average performances at the succeeding editions.
