Women's World Boxing Championships Final Preview: India look at record finish

Nikhat, Nitu, Lovlina and Saweety will bout for gold.

India, along with China, will see the highest number of participants in the finals of the ongoing Women's World Boxing Championships 2023. Four Indians have secured their berths in the final of the mega event held in New Delhi. A tournament that has seen it surrounded by controversies, whether it may be the issue between the IOC and the IBA or the boycott of the tournament by boxers from at least eight countries, Indian boxers have ensured we return from the World Boxing Championships with a record number of medals.

We take a look at the preview of the four finals that involve Indians at the World Boxing Championships:

Nitu Ghanghas (48 kg)

Opponent in the final - Altantsetseg Lutsaikhan (Mongolia)

Journey to the final

Nitu Ganghas won her first three bouts through RSC (Referee stopped contest). RSC is applied by the referee if the match travels one-sidedly. She faced a stern test in the semifinal and in the end, defeated 2022 World Boxing Championships silver medallist Alua Balkibekova to progress through to the final. Nitu changed was taken aback in the opening round but came back stronger changing the tactics.

Lovlina Borgohain (75kg)

Opponent in the final - Caitlin Anne Parker (Australia)

Journey to the final

Two-time world championship bronze medallist (2018 and 2019) is set to contest for the first time in the final of the World Boxing Championships. The athlete from Assam got a bye in the opening round (R32) and had easy outings in pre-quarters and quarterfinals defeating Ortiz and Gramane (5-0) respectively. She defeated former World Champion Li Qian (4-1) by a split decision and is set to take on Anne Parker in the final.

Saweety Boora (81kg)

Opponent in the final - Wang Lina (China)

Journey to the final

The 30-year-old received a bye in the opening round (R16) and directly entered the quarterfinals. Saweety defeated Victoriya Kebikava (5-0) in a one-sided contest. She had a stern test in the semifinals against Australia’s Emma-Sue Greentree and won the contest by a split decision (4-3). The 2014 World Boxing Championships silver medallist will take on Wang Lina in the gold medal match.

Nikhat Zareen (50 kg)

Opponent in the final - Thi Tham Nguyen (Vietnam)

Journey to the final

Nikhat Zareen had a fairly smooth ride to the final. Like is the case usually, Nikhat secured multiple one-sided 5-0 wins on her way to the finals of the World Boxing Championships. The only game where she had points scored against her was in the quarter-finals of the tournament, where she beat her opponent 5-2.
