The tournament has always been a tough challenge for the Indian shuttlers.

Indian shuttlers haven't been able to achieve great success in the prestigious Sudirman Cup since it's inception in 1989. The 2021 edition of the tournament has also been a disaster for India so far, as they are out of the quarterfinals race after crushing defeats against Thailand and China.

In the previous edition of the Sudirman Cup, India also failed to qualify for the quarterfinals of the tournament. Placed in Group 1D along with China and Malaysia, India lost both their matches.

The Indian team registered its best performances in only two editions of this biennial event. India managed to reach the quarterfinals of the tournament on both occasions, but did not progress further. Let's take a look at India's best performances in this prestigious event:

2017 Sudirman Cup

Ranked ninth in the world at that time, India were placed in Group 1D along with Denmark and Indonesia. In its first match against Denmark, India won 4-1, but eventually lost 1-4 to Indonesia in the next outing. Since Denmark lost both their matches, India and Indonesia qualified for the quarterfinals.

However, a tougher challenge came in front of them in the last eight against the most successful team, China. Unfortunately, the Indian team lost in straight matches 3-0. Starting with mixed doubles, the Indian duo of Ashwini Ponnappa and Satwik Sairaj lost 21-16, 13-21, 16-21 to Lu Kai and Huang Yaqiong.

Later, Srikanth Kidambi lost in straight sets 16-21, 17-21 to Chen Long in the men's singles. India faced another setback as the men's doubles pair of Satwik Sairaj and Chirag Shetty lost 9-21, 11-21 to Fu Haifeng and Zhang Nan. Eventually, China emerged as the winners of the Sudirman Cup in 2017.

2011 Sudirman Cup

India were placed in Group 1C at the 2011 Sudirman Cup, along with Chinese Taipei and Thailand. While the Indian team lost 2-3 to Chinese Taipei, they won against Thailand 3-2 to make it through the quarterfinals.

In the quarterfinals, they again encountered the tough Chinese team. They eventually lost 1-3 to the Chinese team. In the men's doubles match, Sanave Thomas and Rupesh Kumar lost 15-21, 14-21 to Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng in a contest that lasted for just 29 minutes.

In the next match, Saina Nehwal levelled the score by winning the women's singles match 21-15, 21-11 against Wang Xin. Parupalli Kashyap then lost 14-21, 14-21 to Lin Dan in the men's singles contest. Moreover, the women's doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa also suffered an 8-21, 13-21 loss in the match against Xu Chen-Ma Jin. This marked India's exit from the tournament. China emerged victorious in this edition as well.

What's next for India?

At the ongoing Sudirman Cup 2021, India are out of the quarterfinals race after a 0-5 loss to China. Previously, they lost to Thailand in their first group match. Therefore, they are left with only one group match which will be against hosts Finland. Many of the top players like PV Sindhu, Saina Nehwal, Satwik Sairaj, and Chirag Shetty were absent in this edition for various reasons.

The reason why China are so successful in the Sudirman Cup is that they have a pool of quality players in each category. This makes them give a tough fight to every country in the tournament. India's strongest discipline is women singles, but after that, it gets difficult for them to earn points in the other categories. Therefore, the overall development of players in all categories will help India pass the quarterfinals stage in the Sudirman Cup.
