The nation's only medals so far have come in weightlifting.

It was a fruitful day for Indian athletes on the third day of the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Birmingham. After a fantastic Day 2 where Indian athletes won several medals including Mirabai Chanu’s gold, Indian players pounced on Day 3 too, with Jeremy Lalrinnunga clinching India’s second gold medal in weightlifting.

Now, the action shifts to Day 4 where several other players will be in action with a chance of a podium finish and to bring home some more medals. Let’s look at some of the medal prospects and matches on Day 4.

Ajay Singh - Men’s 81kg category finals – Weightlifting

India’s Ajay Singh will be in action in the finals of the men’s 81kg category in weightlifting on Day 4 of the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham. He recently won gold at the National Weightlifting Championships after aggregating a total of 315kg to claim the men’s 81kg title.

He directly qualified for the games last year after securing gold at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent. Ajay will be another medal contender in weightlifting after Mirabai Chanu, Sanket Sargar, Bindyarani Devi, Gururaja Poojary and Jeremy Lalrinnunga won medals in their respective category events.

Harjinder Kaur – Women’s 71kg Finals – Weightlifting

Harjinder Kaur will be another medal prospect on Day 4 when she takes the mat in the women’s 71kg category finals. She won silver medal at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships last year. Harjinder, who was also the 2020 Khelo India University Games champion, lifted 90kg in snatch and 121kg in clean and jerk for a combined lift of 211kg. However, this time the task will be greater.

Niranjan Mukundan & Suyash Narayan Jadhav – Men’s 50m Freestyle S7 Finals – Para Swimming

Mukundan and Jadhav will be other hopeful medal prospects when both compete in the men’s 50m freestyle S7 finals. Niranjan has won over 60 medals throughout his career and is the only para swimmer to win more than 50 international medals.

He also featured in the Forbes 30 under 30 list, which highlighted prominent Asian members from the sports and entertainment industries, in 2019.

Suyash is the first Indian Para Swimmer to register ‘A’ qualifying mark for the 2016 Paralympics in Rio and Tokyo Olympics 2020. Niranjan qualified for the finals with the timing of 33.2 seconds whereas his fellow Suyash clocked 32.36 seconds to book a berth in the finals. Both will eye a podium finish.

Cycling

India have high hopes of winning multiple medals when the cycling squad will compete in different events on Day 4 of the CWG'22. L Ronaldo Singh and David Elkatohchoongo will compete in the Men's time trial final. While Meenakshi will compete in Women's scratch race final. Naman Kapil and Venkappa Kengalagutti will be competing in Men's point race final.

Men's 1000m Time Trail Finals

L Ronaldo Singh is perhaps the best medal contender to get a medal. He won the silver medal in the men’s sprint at the Asian championships last month, becoming the first Indian to win a silver medal at the tournament. He has also won bronze in the men’s 1000m time trial and men’s team sprint at the event.

Hailing from Andaman & Nicobar Islands, E David Beckham shot to fame afte he won multiple medals in Khelo India Games 2020. His first international medal came in the year 2021 and he recently won bronze at the Asian Track Cycling Championships with Ronaldo Singh.

Naman Kapil whose favourite cyclist is Ashton Lambie from the USA, won his first International medal at the junior level in 2017.

All the members of the cycling squad will look beyond the disappointment they had in their other events where they failed to qualify for the finals. At the CWG, India has never won a cycling medal and this is perhaps it's best chance to bet on.
