The quadrennial event is in the last couple of days before coming to its conclusion.
The Tokyo Paralympics 2020 have been a hugely successful campaign for India. Indian para athletes have been very impressive in their performances across different disciplines. The previous best of four medals was broken in incredible fashion. Para athletes like Avani Lekhara and Sumit Antil have created history as well, by winning gold medals for India in shooting and javelin throw respectively.
The multi-sport event is now in its final days. The penultimate day will have a handful of Indians in action, as most of the contingent has completed their campaign. Eyes will be on Indian badminton players, as they can deliver a lot of medals on the day. Sports such as shooting will also see Indian representation on Saturday.
Here is a preview of what is to come on 4 September 2021 at the ongoing Tokyo Paralympics in Japan:
Shooting: P4 – Mixed 50m Pistol SH1
The qualification round for the P4 – Mixed 50m Pistol SH1 category event will take place on Saturday. India will have Manish Narwal, Akash and Singhraj contest for the spots in the finals. Singhraj has already won a bronze medal in the Men’s 10m Air Pistol SH1event. He will look to increase his medal count at the Tokyo Paralympics
The event will begin at 6:00 AM IST
Badminton: Men’s Singles SL3
Eyes will be on Badminton as well, as several Indians are in the running for a Paralympic medal. Badminton has been introduced for the first time at the Paralympics this time around and the Indians have been impressive until now. In the Men’s Singles SL3 category, World No.1 Pramod Bhagat will be up against Japan’s Daisuke Fujihara in the semi-final.
The match will begin at 6:15 AM
Manoj Sarkar has also made it to the semi-final of the Men’s Singles SL3 category. The para-shuttler will play Great Britain’s Daniel Bethell for a place in the final of the tournament.
The clash will begin at 7 AM
Badminton: Men’s Singles SL4
Para shuttler Tarun Dhillon has been in terrific form at the ongoing Tokyo Paralympics. He won two out of his three group matches. Dhillon will be up against France’s Lucas Mazur in the semi-finals.
Suhas Lalinakere Yathiraj will face Fredy Setiawan of Indonesia in the semi-finals at the Tokyo Paralympics. He has been in the news for quite a while as the para shuttler is also an IAS officer. Suhas serves as the District Magistrate of Gautam Buddha Nagar, Noida.
Both matches will begin at 7:45 AM
Badminton: Men’s Singles SH6
Krishna Nagar won both of his group matches to book a place in the semi-finals of the Tokyo Paralympics. He will fight for a place in the finals against Great Britain’s Krysten Coombs.
The match will start at 10 AM
Badminton: Mixed Doubles SL3-SU5
The Indian pair of Pramod Bhagat and Palak Kohli will be in action in the semi-final of the Mixed Doubles SL3-SU5 category. The duo will be up against Susanto Hary and Oktila Leani of Indonesia. The Indians will have their hands full as the opponents are number one seeds and favourites to win.
The match will begin at 11:45 AM
Athletics: Men’s Javelin Throw F41
The finals of the javelin throw F41 category will take place on Saturday. The medal hopes for India will rest on Navdeep’s shoulders. The para-athlete will have the chance to add another medal to India’s record-setting overall tally.
