The tournament showcased an absolute goal-fest for the audience.
The FIH Women’s Junior Hockey World Cup wrapped up its ninth edition in Potchefstroom, South Africa just a few days ago. The Netherlands came out on top as expected and lifted their record fourth title by defeating Germany in an exhilarating final.
The Dutch team showcased a rampant performance throughout the campaign and achieved success in style. They first produced a repeat of their 2013 semi-final win against India. The Netherlands defeated India 3-0, then skipped past the Germans with a 3-1 win in the final and became the most successful team in the history of the competition.
Germany put up a strong show throughout the campaign, but it was just not meant to be as the Netherlands clinched their record fourth title. The Netherlands had won the title in 1997, 2009, and 2013 before and repeated the same success in this edition as well. India, on the other hand, missed out on a bronze medal, as England cruised past them in the penalty shootout.
The tournament was a perfect platform for youngsters to showcase their aptitude and they did grab their opportunities with both hands. Although it was delayed by a year, it still lived up to its billing.
On that note, Khel Now takes a look at the FIH Women’s Junior Hockey World Cup 2022 by numbers.
Tournament Goals
It rained goals in South Africa as teams brought their A-game to the table. Some top-notch attacking displays from all the teams were the highlight of the FIH Women’s Junior Hockey World Cup. A total of 202 goals were scored throughout the campaign, with the Netherlands leading the chart for scoring the most number of goals (49). The duo of Dicke Jip and Fokke Luna played a crucial role in the Netherlands’ success in the tournament, as they scored a total of 24 goals combined.
Germany scored the second-highest number of goals (32) in the tournament followed by Argentina who scored 27. India scored 16, while bronze medalists England scored just nine goals.
Field Goals
We saw a total of 133 field goals being scored which is around 65% of the total goals. Teams put on an excellent show and often found the back of the net through open play. The Netherlands scored 32 field goals out of their tally of 49.
Germany found the back of the net through open play 25 times out of 32. Argentina scored 18 field goals out of 27 while India netted 11 out 16 through open play.
Penalty-Corners
Teams used penalty-corners as their second-best alternative to finding the back of the net. A total of 61 penalty-corners were converted into goals, with the Netherlands leading the pack again with 17 successful conversions.
Germany and Ireland followed them as they converted seven each. Argentina converted six, while India finished five penalty corners to perfection. Surprisingly, Zimbabwe were the only side who failed to score a single goal from penalty-corners.
Penalty-Strokes
Penalty-strokes were the least used scoring medium in the tournament. Only a total of eight penalty-strokes were converted throughout the course of the tournament. Argentina finished with the most successful strokes (3).
This was followed by England (2) and one each by the United States, Malaysia and Uruguay. Contrastingly, champions the Netherlands, runners-up Germany, fourth paced India and other teams did not get a single penalty-stroke throughout the tournament.
Total cards
The officials had a busy tournament in the middle of the turf. A total of 104 cards were shown throughout the two-week mega event. The referees showed 86 green cards and 18 yellow cards to the players, while surprising no one saw a red card.
