India continued their domination of the Air Pistol events, as they won both Bronze and Gold in the 10m Air Pistol Mixed team events at the ISSF World Cup on Monday.
The duo of Yashaswini Singh Deswal and Abhishek Verma defeated the Turkish duo of Ilayda Tarhan and Ismail Keles 17-13 to win the bronze medal. Meanwhile, Manu Bhaker and Saurabh Chaudhary went one better to defeat the Iranian duo of Golnoush Sebghatollahi and Javad Foroughi 16-12 to take the gold.
In the bronze medal match, India raced to an 8-0 lead with some spirited shooting from Yashaswini Singh Deswal and Abhishek Verma and some help from Ilayda Tarhan and Ismail Keles who weren't at their best. But, the Turkish opposition showed remarkable resolve to tie the match at 11-11. Just when you thought that it could be a turnaround, Verma and Deswal regained their composure and overcame some nervy moments to win the bronze with the scoreboard reading 17-13 in their favour in the end.
As for the gold medal match, India didn't have the best of starts as the pressure of being hosts and favourites seemed to have sunk in early. But then, Saurabh Chaudhary picked up and shot accurately, with plenty of help from Manu Bhaker as well, to help India's cause. From 10-6 down, India stormed back to take the game 16-12 and thereby win India's 5th gold medal in the ongoing ISSF World Cup. It is also worth noting that four of which have come in the Air Pistol events.
By winning the gold in the mixed team event, Bhaker and Chaudhary also successfully defended their gold medal win in the 2019 World Cup.
