The Indian shuttlers faced defeats in straight games in the semi-finals.
The semi-finals of the Korea Open Badminton Championships 2022 saw PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth, the lone representatives in their respective disciplines, faltering unexpectedly. Both the shuttlers failed to book their place in the finals of the USD 500,000 event.
The Indian challenge also ended with their defeats in the last four of the tournament. Sindhu is the only Indian player to win the tournament. She did it in style in 2017, however, failed to replicate the same performance this year.
Sindhu loses to An Se Young
Two-time Olympic medalist Sindhu was up against home favourite and second seed An Se Young in the semi-final of the Korea Open. The Korean shuttler had enjoyed an impressive head-to-head against Sindhu where she had remained unbeaten. And it was Seyoung who prevailed over the Indian player once again.
The former World Champion didn’t have answers to Se Young's shots as she was completely out-manoeuvred by her opponent. The second seed just took two games 21-14, 21-17 to clinch the victory. With this win, Seyoung reached her second consecutive final after the All England Open. She will now be up against Pornpawee Chochuwong of Thailand for the title of Korea Open.
Srikanth succumbs to Jonatan Christie in straight games
Former World No.1 and World Championship silver medalist Srikanth lost to Jonatan Christie of Indonesia 19-21, 16-21 in straight games. The Indian shuttler entered with a lot of high hopes to reach another summit clash after the World Championships. But his run was halted by the Indonesian ace who prevailed in the end.
Srikanth went toe-to-toe with his opponent and kept him on the edges till the end of both the games. However, the Indonesian youngster proved to be too good in the end and handed a defeat to Srikanth in Korea Open. Christie had earlier defeated Srikanth in the semi-finals of the Swiss Open.
He will now either play Victor Svendsen or Weng Hong Yang in the final for the title of Korea Open.
