This edition of the Super 500 event witnessed only one title retention.
The Malaysia Masters Super 500 had some spine-chilling and unexpected encounters on its finals day. Olympic champion Chen Yufei failed to defend her title this year as she lost extraordinarily.
However, defending champions Zheng Siwei and Huang Ya Qiong were successfully able to defend their title. The Super 500 event was dominated by the Chinese and the Indonesians. Both the countries secured 2 titles each.
Plenty of chances but no finished product
Let us have a look at the results that turned out in the title summit clashes at the Malaysia Masters.
An Se Young demolished the Olympic champion Chen Yufei.
Star Korean youngster An Se Young recorded her first-ever win over the reigning Olympic champion Chen Yufei of China. Not only did An win the title, but she also outclassed Chen Yufei with a straight-game victory.
An Se Young, started extremely positively by securing a healthy margin over the Chinese shuttler. However, the Chinese shuttler did what she was known for. Chen, despite being down at 11-5 was able to make a run and leave the gap by just one point at 17-18. However, the Korean youngster stayed as calm as possible and carved out consecutive points to win the game 21-17.
In the second, it was expected that the Chinese shuttler would subsequently bring her patiently game as she had done before. But, the ‘giant killer’ had other plans. She went on to score a galore of points and left Chen far behind.
An Se Young comfortably comfortably won the game 21-17, 21-5. She also won her first-ever match against Chen Yufei in eight meetings and her second Super 500 title.
Dwi Wardoyo clinches his first World Tour title.
Indonesian shuttler Dwi Wardoyo clinched his first World Tour title by beating former winner Ng Ka Long Angus of Hong Kong. The shuttler showed grit in the neck-to-neck battle to win the match 22-20, 21-15.
On the other hand Indonesian pair of Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Ardianto outplayed their countrymen Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan 21-12, 21-19. The World no.3s lost in their second Super 500 final of the year.
Olympic silver medalist and world no.1 pairs shine in women’s doubles and mixed doubles.
Olympic silver medalist mixed doubles pair of Zheng Siwei and Huang Ya Qiong of China won an easy battle against Rinoy Rivaldy and Pitha Mentari of Indonesia in two straight games 21-17, 21-12. The Chinese pair continued their fabulous run and won their fifth title of the year.
Later in the day, women’s doubles World no.1s Chen Qing Chen and Jia Yi of China defeated Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida of Japan 21-11, 21-12 in two straight games. The pair also lifted their third title of the season.
