The 38-year-old is one of the brightest medal prospects at the Tokyo Paralympics.
Badminton is a joyous sport for Indians, especially in the Olympic stage. The sport gave India three medals in three editions. In the 2020 Paralympics, Badminton is an event with high hopes for a medal. Chief among the Indian medal prospects in the event is Suhas LY, a 38-year-old para-shuttler from Uttar Pradesh.
What makes Suhas LY such an inspiration is the fact that apart from being one of the 54 members of the Indian contingent at the Tokyo Paralympics, he also serves as the District Magistrate for Gautam Buddha Nagar.
Here are five things you should know about talismanic Indian shuttler.
5. Engineering roots
Born in Hassan in Karnataka, Suhas LY did most of his schooling in Shivamogga. He completed his graduation studies at the National Institute of Technology in Surathkal. Suhas graduated in 2004, completing his Bachelor’s in Computer Science & Engineering by scoring First Class with Distinction. He took to the government service path as his father was also a government servant.
4. Sports and Administration go hand in hand
Suhas LY has been very renowned not just as a para-athlete but also as an efficient administrator. The Karnataka born shuttler is currently serving as the District Magistrate at Gautam Buddha Nagar and has a brilliant track record in the Administrative Services ever since he graduated from the batch of 2007 as part of the Uttar Pradesh cadre.
He has been shortlisted for the Prime Minister’s Award in 2016 while also receiving several state awards for his performance. Suhas was very recently at the forefront for the fight against the pandemic and is highly experienced.
3. Current world no.3
Suhas LY has a long list of achievements. His singles record is commendable with a gold in 2017 and 2019 in the Turkish Open Para-Badminton Championships, a silver in Japan 2017, Turkey 2018 and Ireland 2019 editions. He also won bronze medals in the Thailand, China, Uganda and Denmark Opens in 2019.
All these achievements vaulted the Karnataka native high in the rankings, and Suhas currently holds the third spot in the world, making him a huge medal prospect for India at the 2020 Paralympics.
2. First Indian bureaucrat to win a medal for India at the global level
In 2016, Suhas LY won the gold medal in the Asian Para-Badminton Championships held in Beijing, China. The shuttler beat Hary Susanto of Indonesia to claim the top spot. In doing so, Suhas also became the first serving Indian Bureaucrat to win a medal for India at the global level.
He was serving as the District Magistrate of Azamgarh at that time. He had already become the first Indian bureaucrat cum athlete to represent India in an international stage, when he competed in the event, but the gold made the achievement even brighter.
1. Asian Championships gold and Asian Para Games Bronze
The gold at the Asian Para-Badminton Championships in China was the biggest achievement for Suhas LY till then. However, he did not stop there. The shuttler went on to secure another medal in the continental stage, this time in the Asian Para Games.
Suhas was part of the Indian team that won the bronze medal in the team standing event in the Asian Para Games held in Jakarta in 2018.
