Whenever we talk about the largest stadiums in the world, there are a few names that come to our mind including Michigan Stadium in the United States, Rungrado 1st of May Stadium in North Korea and Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia. However, India is not behind regarding some of the largest stadiums now in terms of capacity. Here is the list of the top five largest stadiums in India:

5. Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium – 65,000

This cricket stadium is in Raipur, Chattisgarh, and is one of the largest stadiums in India in terms of its capacity. It has a capacity of 65,000, which means the atmosphere has always been electrifying whenever it’s a full house here. It was inaugurated in September 2008, and the ground hosted its first-ever cricket match in 2010 when the Canada national cricket team played a practice game against the Chhattisgarh state team. Since then, the stadium has hosted various matches, including IPL games, CPL T20, and Road Safety World Series matches, to name a few.

4. Eden Gardens – 80,000

Eden Gardens is one of India's finest stadiums that has given millions of memories to millions of fans. This historic venue in Kolkata, West Bengal, regularly hosts international matches for India. With a capacity of eighty-thousand, the packed house in Eden Gardens is no less than a miracle.

It was established in 1864 and became famous because of some memorable cricket moments. One of them happened in 2001 when the Indian legends Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman saved the follow-on and went on to register a phenomenal victory against Australia. Moreover, this magnificent stadium is the home to the Kolkata-based franchise, Kolkata Knight Riders. This beautiful stadium is often referred to as the home of Indian cricket.

3. Vivekananda Yuba Bharti Krirangan (Salt Lake Stadium) – 85,000

With a capacity of eighty-five thousand, Salt Lake Stadium is the home ground for football clubs like ATK Mohun Bagan, East Bengal, and Mohammedan. It is the same venue where the final of the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup took place. Football fans witnessed some spectacular encounters at this marvellous stadium, including the Federation Cup Semifinal between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan in 1997.

Before its renovation in 2011, it was the largest football stadium in the world, having a seating capacity of 1,20,000. International teams like Argentina and Venezuela played a friendly match in 2011 at the Salt Lake and it became historic for the venue and Indian football because superstar Lionel Messi played in that game.

2. Buddh International Circuit – 1,10,000

The Buddh International Circuit is an Indian moto-racing circuit situated in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. The track was officially inaugurated in 2011 with a capacity of 1,10,000. The circuit was known because of the Formula One Indian Grand Prix that happened in October 2011. The Grand Prix was cancelled in 2014 due to a tax dispute with the Government of Uttar Pradesh. Since then, no international championships have raced at the circuit.

1. Narendra Modi Stadium – 1,32,000

The beautiful, epic, well-built Narendra Modi Stadium is the largest stadium in India with a capacity of 1,32,000. It is also the world’s largest cricket stadium after beating Australia’s iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground. This well-designed cricket stadium is located in Ahmedabad and was formerly known as the Sardar Vallabhbhai Cricket Stadium. It is owned by the Gujarat Cricket Association and is the regular venue of Indian Tests, ODIs, and T20I matches.

The stadium hosted its first-ever pink ball Test match in 2021 between India and England. It also hosted the final of the IPL 2022, in which Gujarat Giants won against Rajasthan Royals. This iconic venue is a must-visit, especially if you are a big fan of Indian cricket.
