It will be the 142nd edition of the year-ending Grand Slam.

The US Open 2022 is at hand and it will involve the best of the best of what tennis has to offer in terms of players across multiple categories. It will take place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park of Queens in New York City, New York, United States. The tournament starts from 29 August 2022 to 11 September 2022 on hard court. It lets the fans witness high-octane tennis action by the players that are aiming to win the final Grand Slam of the year on the ATP/WTA tour.

Last year’s winners of the Men’s and Women’s Singles categories, Daniil Medvedev and Emma Raducanu respectively will also be part of the action this time. The defending champions will hope to end the year on a high and retain the title in their categories.

However, retaining the title is easier said than done. They will have a huge task of fending off the challengers as the Grand Slam will have a strong lineup like every year. With the main bracket of the tournament merely days away, here are the five players to watch out for in the 2022 US Open:

Iga Swiatek

Iga Swiatek is the World No.1 tennis player in the Women’s Singles rankings. The 21-year-old will be one of the favourites to win the Women’s Singles bracket and has a point to prove after a shock early exit at Wimbledon earlier this year. She won the French Open prior to that and will take confidence from it.

The Pole has never won the US Open previously, reaching the fourth round last year. However, her aggressive playing style will be a treat to watch on the hard court surface. It makes her a dangerous prospect and one to watch out for.

Rafael Nadal

Rafael Nadal’s injury led to him withdrawing from Wimbledon in the semi-final earlier. However, after proper rest and recuperation, the Spaniard should be back to his best at the 2022 US Open. The 22-time Grand Slam winner has four US Open wins and will aim to add a fifth to the tally.

Despite his shock exit at the Round of 32 at the Cincinnati Masters, Nadal will be a strong challenger in the Men’s Singles category. He has a knack for delivering on the big stage and the world will have eyes on the Spaniard once again.

Elena Rybakina

Elena Rybakina was in sensational form on her way to winning the 2022 Wimbledon title in the Women’s Singles category. The 23-year-old became the first tennis player from Kazakhstan to win a Grand Slam title. She will be one of the players to watch out for despite her recent performances.

Elena Rybakina plays strong groundstrokes and has a strong serve. These qualities are tailor-made for any player to succeed on the hard court surface. It will be interesting to see how she fares in the category which also has players like Naomi Osaka, Emma Raducanu, etc.

Daniil Medvedev

Daniil Medvedev is the defending champion after winning the Men’s Singles category last year. The Russian is the World No.1 according to the ATP rankings in men’s singles. He beat the favourite Novak Djokovic in the final during the 2021 edition to win his first ever Grand Slam title.

Daniil Medvedev made the final at 2022 Australian Open but lost in the final to Rafael Nadal. He is an outstanding hard-court player who likes to power his way to wins. However, his recent form will pose some questions after failing to win the Canada Open and the Cincinnati Masters to Nick Kyrgios and Stefanos Tsitsipas respectively. Having said that, the will to retain his title will certainly push Medvedev to give his all.

Novak Djokovic

Novak Djokovic will be one of the obvious players to watch out for. The incredible Serbian won the 2022 edition of Wimbledon, which was the seventh time in his career. He is one of the strongest hard-court players and stopping him from winning the US Open will take a herculean effort.

Novak Djokovic has three US Open wins in the past and will be a strong favourite to win his fourth. He made it to the final in the 2021 edition but lost in straight sets to Medvedev who will be aiming to retain the title this year.
