Read: Boxing Federation of India, AIBA at loggerheads due to non-payment of host fees
The International governing body have also revealed that the fees should have been paid by the Indian federation by summer 2018.
International Boxing Association (AIBA) has lashed out at Boxing Federation of India (BFI) for failing to comply with its obligations and also not having paid over two-thirds of the host fee after conducting the Women’s World Championship in 2018.
This response has come on the backdrop of a statement by the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) that accused the AIBA of acting in 'haste' after the latter snatched away the hosting rights of the Men’s World Championship in 2021 from the former.
The statement released by the AIBA cited, “The decision by AIBA was also prompted by the fact that almost two thirds of the Host Fee due by BFI for having hosted the 2018 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships remains outstanding to date, more than 18 months after the event.”
“This host fees should have been paid by BFI in summer 2018. AIBA showed a lot of patience and comprehension, agreeing on numerous successive repayment plans, which were never respected by BFI,” the statement added.
On the other hands, the BFI had acknowledged the delay in payment but proceeded to blame the “procedural complications” on AIBA’s end as it failed to resolve issues with regards to the account where the money was to be transferred.
"AIBA account in Lausanne was frozen. The account of AIBA in Switzerland as mentioned in Host City Agreement is still inoperative. AIBA intended to have some previous payments through an account in Serbia," BFI said.
"As Serbia is in the Grey List of Financial Action Task Force (FATF) countries, Indian Banks do not normally send money to Serbia. AIBA could not resolve these issues."
Meanwhile, the AIBA transferred the hosting rights for the Men’s World Championships 2021 to the Serbian capital of Belgrade.
AIBA’s statement on the whole matter further added that, “AIBA also disputes the reasons given by BFI for not paying their dues to AIBA. In the current situation, AIBA cannot take the risk to suffer further losses caused by BFI’s failure to comply with its obligations.”
The concluding remarks made by the statement stated that, “New Delhi did not fulfill its obligations to pay the host fees mentioned in the Host City Agreement, despite numerous reminders by AIBA and after having been offered multiple options to settle their obligations, AIBA had no choice but to terminate the contract in April 2020.”
The AIBA has further imposed a fine of $500 USD on the Boxing Federation of India as a cancellation penalty, which was deemed “shocking and surprising” by the latter.
