Coronavirus: IOA contributes 71 lakhs to PM CARES Fund

The governing body has urged the central and the state authorities to come forward in fighting the pandemic.

The Indian Olympics Association, just like the other sports bodies, has come forward and donated a sum of Rs 71,14,002 towards Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund (PM CARES Fund) to counter the coronavirus pandemic that has kept the whole world at a standstill.

The IOA released a statement expressing their solidarity and gratitude towards National Sports Federations and State Olympics Associations and other national and state sporting bodies by "extending their support and humble contributions towards the cause of our nation’s fight against the COVID-19 pandemic”.

“In these challenging times, the coming together of the Olympic family to support the nation’s need once again reinforces our belief that we shall always come out stronger to serve sports and make the nation proud,” read the IOA statement.

Apart from the IOA, Hockey India and even the All India Football Federation (AIFF) came forward with donations of 25 lakhs each. To add to that the BCCI has also made a donation of 51 crores to the emergency relief fund. Lastly, the Indian football team has also pledged to donate a sum of 50 lakhs and other imminent personalities and sportspersons have also pledged to donate to tackle this serious pandemic in the country.

At the point of writing, the current confirmed cases in India of COVID-19 stands at 2088 while as per reports, 56 people have lost their lives. While the numbers are horrifying with over one million people getting affected and nearly 50,000 people losing their lives.
