French Open 2022: Nadal sets up clash with Djokovic in quarter-finals
The duo of Rohan Bopanna and Matwe Middelkoop beat the second-seeded pair in Men's doubles.
For the past week, the crowds at Roland Garros in Paris, France have seen sensational tennis in the French Open 2022. The tournament is edging towards its business end with many exciting matches in the coming days. One of the most anticipated matches of the tournament will take place on 31 May 2022 between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.
Both players were firm favourites before the start of the tournament. Defending champions Novak Djokovic secured a place in the quarter-final by defeating Diego Schwartzman in straight sets. The number one seed got the better of the 15th seeded player by a 6-1, 6-3, 6-3 score. On the other hand, Rafael Nadal had to dig deep to win his fixture. The 13-time French Open winner had to play five sets to set up a meeting with Djokovic.
Playing against Felix Auger-Aliassime, the Spaniard won by a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 score. Eyes will be on the upcoming 59th meeting between Nadal and Djokovic, which is a men’s record.
Third seed Alexander Zverev was also in action, playing against Bernabe Zapata Miralles. The German athlete made short work of the Spaniard by beating him 7-6 (11), 7-5, 6-3. In the Women’s Singles, 18th seed Coco Gauff surged ahead with a comfortable 6-4, 6-0 win over Elise Mertens.
Notable Results Elsewhere
The sixth seed Carlos Alcaraz was also in action, playing against Karen Khachanov. He managed to win in straight sets 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 to set up a mouth-watering clash with Alexander Zverev in the quarter-final.
In addition to Coco Gauff, Americans such as Sloane Stephens and Amanda Anisimova were also in action, trying to win their contests. While Stephens recorded a win over Jil Teichmann by a 6-2, 6-0 score, the latter had to suffer a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 defeat to 17th seed Leylah Fernandez.
Over at the Men’s Doubles, Indian tennis star Rohan Bopanna alongside Matwe Middelkoop advanced further. They beat the second seed pairing of Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic. The pair caused a huge upset by winning the third round match thanks to a 6-7(5-7), 7-6(7-3), 7-6(12-10) score.
In Women’s Doubles, 10th seeds Sania Mirza and Lucie Hradecka beat the Slovenian pair of Kaja Juvan and Tamara Zidansek by 6-3, 6-4 to enter the third round. They will now play against the American pair of Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff.
