India officially bids to host Olympic Games 2036 with Ahmedabad as proposed host city

For the first time, India officially communicates its desire to host the Olympic Games.

A major development occurred in India’s bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games. For the first time, the country submitted its official proposal, as a high-level delegation commenced its three-day trip with a visit to the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Lausanne, Switzerland.

This delegation comprises of officials from the Union Sports Ministry, the Government of Gujarat, and Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha. The major objective would be to convince the international community, to host the Games in India, with Ahmedabad being chosen as the host city for the prestigious competition.

Ahmedabad, a city in Gujarat, has been made the pinnacle of India’s Olympic aspirations, with the city boasting large acres of land which could be converted into stadiums and the required infrastructure for the marquee event. Should their bid be successful, India will leave no stone unturned, to convert the city into a world-class sporting hub.

In a statement from the Indian delegation, the discussions were described as productive in presenting India’s vision and gaining valuable guidance from the IOC on the technical and logistical requirements for hosting the Games.

“We are eager to be a true partner to the IOC in the coming months of this process and, hopefully, in the years to come, as we work together to realise this shared ambition,” said Gujarat Sports Minister Harsh Sanghavi, upon the conclusion of the meeting.

IOA President and legendary athlete PT Usha said “The Olympic Games in India would not just be a spectacular event, they would be one of generational impact for all Indians.”

India’s proposal is being positioned as a once-in-a-generation chance to inspire the country’s 600 million young people, giving them the opportunity to witness the world’s biggest sporting event on home soil for the very first time.

Central to India’s vision is the ancient Indian philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, which means “the world is one family.” By embracing this ideal, India aims to welcome athletes and visitors from across the globe with a spirit of unity and inclusivity, promising an Olympic experience that brings people together and celebrates both diversity and togetherness.

India’s first official attempt at earning the hosting rights will be challenged by others nations in the reckoning, which include Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Turkey and Chile.
