Total medals won by Malaysia in each sport at Summer Paralympics

Malaysia won its first medal at the Paralympics in weightlifting.
Malaysia made its breakthrough at the Paralympics at Seoul in 1988. They were competing at the games for the second time after making its debut in 1972. At the Seoul games in 1998, the Malaysian contingent had 14 athletes as opposed to 4 in 1972. Mariappan Perumal became the country’s first Paralympic medallist.
He was 30 years old when winning the bronze medal in men’s 57 kg weightlifting. It was the only medal Malaysia collected at Seoul. Perumal’s win was significant as it encouraged para-athletes across the nation to compete at the games.
In the 1992 Barcelona Paralympics, there were three medallists. All three medallists created history for the nation. Perumal became the first Malaysian athlete to win multiple medals at the games. Cheok Kon Fatt became the first silver medallist from the nation as he finished second in men’s 52 kg weightlifting.
