Total medals won by Malaysia in every edition of Paralympics

Malaysia made its Paralympics debut in 1972 at Heidelberg Germany.

Malaysia has been competing regularly at the Paralympics since 1988. The nation first took part at the Paralympics in 1972 at Heidelberg where it sent four athletes. The next three editions saw the country missing the games. But since 1988, Malaysia has taken part in every edition of the Paralympics.

The performances began improving for Malaysia from the 1988 Seoul Paralympics. Mariappan Perumal was the first athlete from Malaysia to win a medal at the games. He won bronze in men’s 57 kg weightlifting with a best lift of 165 kgs. Perumal took part in seven editions of the games and won two medals.

The weightlifter made his Paralympic debut in 1988 at Seoul and took part in every edition until the 2012 London games. He again won the bronze medal in the 1992 Barcelona Paralympics in men’s 60 kg weightlifting. The 1992 games saw Malaysia winning three medals.

Cheok Kon Fatt secured his country’s first silver medal at the games in 1992. He finished with a best attempt of 170 kgs in men’s 52 kg weightlifting.

There was a medal drought in the next three editions as the 2008 Beijing games saw history being created for Malaysia. Siow Lee Chan became Malaysia’s first woman Paralympic medallist. She won bronze in women’s 56kg powerlifting with a best attempt of 95 kgs. It was the only medal for the country at the games.

The 2016 Rio games saw further history being created for Malaysia. Three athletes collected gold medals in track and field events. Mohamad Ridzuan Mohamad Puzi won gold in men’s 100m T36 category with a timing of 12.07 secs. Abdul Latif Romly won gold in men’s long jump T20 event with a best jump of 7.60m.

Muhammad Ziyad Zolkefli secured the third gold in men’s shot F20 event with a best throw of 16.84m. The Tokyo games saw Abdul Latif Romly become the first Malaysian to win two gold medals at the games. The nation collected five medals consisting of three golds and two silvers.
