A look at Avinash Sable's qualification for Paris Olympics 2024

Avinash Sable has quickly risen to prominence as India’s premier long-distance runner since bursting onto the scene a few years ago, despite starting his athletic career as recently as 2015.
Avinash Mukund Sable, born in 1994 in Mandwa village in Maharashtra’s Beed district was raised in a modest family environment.
He enlisted in the Indian Army after completing 12th grade and served with the 5 Mahar regiment across Siachen, Rajasthan and Sikkim enduring extreme climates.
Avinash Sable’s journey to Paris Olympics 2024
Introduced to running in 2015 through the army’s athletics program, he excelled at cross-country competitions, despite initial setbacks from injury and weight gain.
Sable started training in steeplechase in 2017. Encouragement by coach Amrish Kumar proved transformative, boosting both Sable’s career and Indian athletics.
Avinash Sable, who has been leading the nation in the 3000m steeplechase event, clinched qualification for the Paris Olympics 2024 with a sixth-placed finish at the Silesia Diamond League event last year.
The national champion achieved a time of 8.11.63 seconds, which was slightly short of his previous best of 8:11.20, but comfortably exceeding the Paris Olympics qualifying standard of 8:15.00.
Opting out of the Diamond League Finals in Eugene, Avinash Sable focused on the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, where he clinched gold with a Games record of 8:19.50 in the steeplechase event.
Avinash Sable secured the men’s 5000m silver at Hangzhou 2023 with a timing of 13:21.09, narrowly missing gold due to Bahrain’s Birhanu Balew’s Games record-breaking performance.
Avinash Sable’s national record in 3000m steeplechase
Avinash Sable set the current men’s 3000m steeplechase national record at the Paris Diamond League 2024 where he finished sixth. This marked his 10th time breaking the national record.
He recorded a timing of 8:09.91 seconds and was placed fourth at the start of the final lap. Sable was outpaced during the final metres of the race.
