India at Paris Olympics 2024: Hockey schedule, squad, live streaming details
India will start their campaign against New Zealand on 27th July.
The Indian men’s hockey team will have to bear the weight of the expectations of a billion people, as they enter the Stade Yves-du-Manoir. After ending a 41-year-wait by winning a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Games, fans would be hoping for a repeat, if not an improvement.
The most successful nation in men’s hockey at the Olympics, India have won a total of eight gold medals. Apart from this, they have also won one silver and three bronze medals. Their tally of 12 Olympic medals is also the highest for a nation.
India have struggled for form recently. They finished seventh among nine teams in the FIH Pro League 2023-24. They also played a test series in Australia earlier this year, where they lost all their five matches against the home team.
At Paris Olympics 2024, the team will be challenged upfront. In the group, they will have to contend with the likes of World No. 3 Belgium (gold medal winners at Tokyo), World No. 4 Australia (silver medal winners at Tokyo) and World No. 6 Argentina. While the top four teams will progress, India would want to finish high in the table, in order to avoid the two of the best ranked teams in the world, Netherlands and Great Britain, in the quarter-finals.
Keeping form aside, India have one of the best squads in the tournament. Skipper Harmanpreet Singh leads the way. While his role in the defence will be crucial, India will be banking on his drag-flicking capabilities during penalty-corners. Goalkeeper P.R. Sreejesh and midfielder Manpreet Singh will be playing their fourth consecutive Olympics. Five players will be making their Olympic debut. The team, thus, has the ideal balance of youth and experience, which is a necessary criterion for putting up a good performance at such a big event.
