Rafael Nadal will be playing in his final Olympics.
Rafael Nadal and Roland Garros are a never-ending love story that could potentially witness its last chapter at the 2024 Olympic Games. The undisputed “King of Clay” couldn’t have wished for a more fitting Olympic farewell, and he will aim to add to his 2008 Beijing gold medal.
The 2024 Paris Games will mark Nadal’s fourth appearance in the Games. He won the gold medal in men’s singles at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and another gold in men’s doubles at the 2016 Rio Olympics with Marc López. Despite being a strong contender, the Spaniard missed the 2012 London Olympics due to injury.
The 38-year-old enters the grand event on the back of a mixed performance at the Bastad Open. Despite facing lower-ranked opponents, life wasn’t easy for Nadal in the tournament. One of his victories included a grueling four-hour match, another reminder that despite being past his prime, the Spaniard’s resilience and never-die attitude remain intact.
The last two days have imposed uncertainty over the 14-time French Open winners’ singles campaign in Paris. His coach announced that Nadal was nursing a thigh injury, leaving his participation in doubt. However, since then, rumors have surfaced that the Spaniard has recovered and played a doubles practice match with Alcaraz ahead of their clash today.
Today, we will be taking a look at Rafael Nadal’s projected path to glory.
Round 1: Marton Fucsovics
Marton Fucsovics, ranked 83rd, coming off a modest season with early exits at the Miami Open, Italian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and Austrian Open. He faced a strong challenge at the 2024 French Open, where Tsitsipas defeated him in straight sets in the first round. Even if Nadal is only partially fit, he should be capable of overcoming this challenge and advancing to the second round.
Round 2: Novak Djokovic
Novak Djokovic could potentially meet Rafael Nadal in the second round, marking the 60th occasion when the two legendary players face each other. One of the biggest disadvantages of being unseeded is playing top-ranked players in the early stages of the competition and there are not many tougher challenges than facing the 24-time Grand Slam champion in the second round.
Historically, Djokovic leads the head-to-head record by just one win, highlighting the duo’s intense rivalry over the years. While the Serbian will be a difficult proposition to contend with, count the “King of Clay” out on your peril.
Round 3: Arthur Fils
Arthur Fils recently defeated Tokyo 2020 gold medalist Alexander Zverev in the German Open and is expected to overcome his potential second-round opponent Matteo Alrandi, despite a 0-3 record against him. Against Zverev, the Frenchman displayed remarkable tenacity and composure, setting high expectations for a similar performance at the 2024 Games.
First things first, if Nadal manages to qualify for the third round, he is certainly a medal contender, signaling a potential return to his past form. The 38-year-old has historically dominated the Frenchman and is adept at managing pressure and maintaining composure in crucial moments, giving him an edge over his rival.
Quarter-final: Stefanos Tsitsipas
Stefanos Tsitsipas has achieved most of his Grand Slam success at the French Open. He reached the quarterfinals this year and was the runner-up in 2021.
Given his consistent performance in Paris and his strong results on clay, he is poised to be a formidable quarterfinal opponent for Nadal. While the Spaniard enjoys a favorable head-to-head, he will be vary of the Greek who certainly has the ability to beat anyone on his day.
Semi-final: Alexander Zverev/Lorenzo Musetti
Nadal could meet defending champion Alexander Zverev in the semifinals. The German finished as the runner-up at this year’s French Open and ousted the Spaniard in the first round as well. The 27-year-old lost in a thrilling five-set match to Fritz at Wimbledon and finished as a finalist in the German Open which concluded less than a week ago.
Zverev’s game is naturally more suited to a best-of-three contest in comparison to a best-of-five and hence he will fancy his chances. However, the Italian- Lorenzo Musetti can’t be ruled out either, having impressed one and all in his remarkable stint at Wimbledon.
Final: Carlos Alcaraz
An all-Spain clash between the guru and his disciple will be a fairy tale coming true for many tennis fans. While the prospect of this clash occurring is low, one can certainly expect Carlos Alcaraz to reach the finals hassle-free given his astounding form this year.
Currently, the 38-year-old holds the edge in the head-to-head record over the 21-year-old. However, the reigning French Open champion is clearly in better form in comparison to Nadal. The 2024 Wimbledon winner will be eager to display his extensive skill set and challenge the 22-time Grand Slam winner with everything he has.
While Rafael Nadal’s path to the Gold Medal match at the Paris Olympics is fraught with challenges given his tough draw, he will remain hopeful for a final standout performance at the world’s most celebrated sporting event.
