There will be two athletes representing India in the water sport.

Vishnu Saravanan and Nethra Kumanan will be taking part in the men’s dinghy and women’s dinghy events at the Paris Olympics 2024.

All events in sailing will be taking place in Marseille, located 400 miles south of Paris. A total of 330 participants will be present with equal number of men and women.

Sailing made its debut at the 1900 Paris Olympics and has been present at the Games ever since, except in 1904. India debuted in the sport at the 1972 Munich edition, with Soli Contractor and AA Basith finishing 29th in the Flying Dutchman Class. A total of 13 Olympians have participated in the sport for the nation since, but none of them were able to medal at the Summer Games. While India had a contingent comprising four sailors at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the number has reduced to two this time around.

A low points scoring system is used for the sport at the Olympics. In case of the dinghy events, the participants will have to compete in 10 races. The aggregate of the points from nine races (the points from the worst race performance are excluded) is calculated. The top 10 athletes with the lowest points secure a spot in the medal race.

Sailing will be held from 28th July to 8th August. Both the Indians, who are appearing in their second successive Olympics, will be taking part in two races on each day from 1st August to 5th August. The medal races for both their categories will take place on 6th August.

Vishnu Sarvanan became just the second Indian sailor to qualify for two successive Olympic Games. At Tokyo, he had finished 20th among 35 contenders. The 25-year-old secured a quota for Paris, by finishing 26th among 152 sailors in the ILCA7 World Championships in Adelaide, earlier this year.

The Vellore-born lad first came into the limelight, when he won the bronze medal at the 2019 U-21 World Championships. Notably, he also won a bronze at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games.

Nethra Kumanan had become the first Indian female sailor to qualify for the Olympics in the previous edition. At Tokyo, she couldn’t make much of a mark, finishing 35th in a fleet of 42. She secured qualification for the 2024 edition at the Last Chance Regatta, an Olympic Qualifier in France, clinching the quota under the Emerging Nations Programme.

The sailor from Chennai has the experience of competing in big events, having participated at the 2014 and 2018 Asian Games. She came fourth at the latter edition, held in Jakarta. The 26-year-old, who is also an engineering student at the SRM College in Chennai, has been a trendsetter in a sport, which is relatively less known in India. She had created history in January 2020, clinching a bronze in the second round of the Hempel World Cup Series in Miami.
