Sumit Nagal will play in his second Olympics.
India’s Sumit Nagal has officially confirmed his participation in the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics. Nagal would be India’s only representative in singles events.
Sumit Nagal, currently 71 in the ATP rankings, has displayed top-level tennis in 2024. He started his year with a breakthrough win over Alexander Bublik in the first round of the 2024 Australian Open in straight sets.
Nagal continued his form by winning the Chennai Challenger and reaching the semi-finals in Bengaluru. Nagal also managed to win a set against Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego in the first round of the Dubai Tennis Championships. At the ATP 1000 Monte Carlo Masters, the 26-year-old defeated Matteo Arnaldi in the first round.
He also gave a gritty fight to Denmark’s Holger Rune in the second round but ended up losing 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Nagal then achieved his career-best ranking of 80 in April. However, he eventually slipped to 95 after being eliminated in the first round of the Bordeaux Challenger, the Geneva Open, and the French Open.

Nagal took to social media and shared the news of his Olympic qualification. He wrote, “Extremely glad to share that I have officially qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics. This is a monumental moment for me as the Olympics holds a special place in my heart!”
He further wrote, “One of my career highlights so far was participating in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Ever since then, Paris has been a big goal for me. Can’t wait to put my best foot forward.”
Nagal also thanked all his sponsors, as well as TOPS and SAI. Nagal was also a part of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where he was eliminated in the second round by Daniil Medvedev. Rohan Bopanna and N. Sriram Balaji will represent the nation in the doubles event at the Stade Roland Garros.
