Rohan Bopanna will look forward to his first Games medal at the Paris Olympics 2024.

India have won just a solitary medal in tennis at the Olympic Games, when Leander Paes won a bronze at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996. The 2024 Paris Olympics will witness the legendary Rohan Bopanna vie for a medal for probably one final time.

Over the past three years, Bopanna and his Aussie partner Matthew Ebden have delivered consistent performances across Grand Slams. Their hard work and synergy paid off when they clinched the 2024 Australian Open title.

The 44-year-old has been on the hunt for a quality Indian partner ever since Sania Mirza’s retirement. At the 2024 French Open, the Bangalorean’s search ended when he closely followed N Sriram Balaji and then played against him in the third round.

Balaji’s explosive game and athleticism on the court—exactly the traits Bopanna was looking for in a doubles partner. Although Balaji didn’t meet the qualification standards, Bopanna had the liberty to choose his partner due to his top 10 doubles ranking. He chose Balaji as his partner for the all-important Paris Olympics.

Meanwhile, Sumit Nagal will compete in his second Olympic Games after featuring at Tokyo 2020, where he defeated Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin in the opening round, but lost to Daniil Medvedev in the next match.

The 26-year old was 138th in the rankings in January but has been in exceptional form since then. The Indian tennis player broke into the top 100 for the first time after winning the Chennai Open earlier this year. Nagal’s final preparation before the Games ended in a loss to Argentina’s Mariano Navone in the quarter-finals of the Bastad Open, preventing him from a potential showdown against 22-time Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal.
