Mirabai Chanu aims to script history as India’s first weightlifting gold medalist.

Indian weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, a former world champion, Commonwealth Games champion and 2020 Tokyo Olympics silver medalist, will be the country’s lone warrior in weightlifting. Her victory in the previous Olympic edition ignited jubilation in the hearts of millions of fans and she will be looking to better her performance and make history.

India have won two medals in weightlifting, with the first coming in the 2000 Sydney Olympics when Karnam Malleswari secured a bronze. After a long wait of 21 years, the 29-year-old from Manipur ended the medal drought by winning silver at the Tokyo Olympics.

Beyond her decorated Olympic triumph, Chanu has an impressive list of achievements, including gold medals at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and the 2017 Anaheim World Championships.

Weightlifting events at the Paris Olympics will start on August 7 and conclude on August 11. All weightlifting events will take place at the South Paris Arena. It is a premier exhibition and convention centre, renowned as one of the most active in Europe and one of the most visited in France.
