World Number #1, Jannik Sinner, has been ruled out of Paris Olympics.
Jannik Sinner, current ATP World No. #1, has withdrawn from the upcoming Paris Olympics 2024 due to tonsillitis. This news comes as a significant blow to the tennis fraternity, as the Italian has been in the form of his life over the past 48 months.
After bowing out of Wimbledon 2024 in the quarterfinals, following loss to Medvedev in a thrilling five setter, the 22-year-old would have been determined to make amends at Paris, where he was also slated to make his Olympic debut.
There were reports earlier today, suggesting that the Italian was set to head to Paris with compatriots Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani, but the 22-year-old had to delay his arrival at the Olympic venue due to a fever.
Unfortunately, the news has now been confirmed and this will be devastating for the number one seed. A podium finish was certainly on the cards and this setback has resulted in Italy potentially losing out on two medals, with Sinner unable to compete in both the men’s singles and doubles events (along with Lorenzo Musetti).
“I am saddened to inform you that unfortunately I will not be able to participate in the Paris Olympic Games. After a good week of clay training, I started to feel unwell. I spent a couple of days resting and during a visit, the doctor found tonsillitis and strongly advised me against playing. Missing the Games is a huge disappointment as it was one of my main goals for this season.

“I couldn’t wait to have the honor of representing my country in this very important event. Good luck to all the Italian athletes who I will support from home,” said Sinner informing the tennis world about his exit (translated from Italian).
The Italian’s withdrawal will now mean that Serbia’s Novak Djokovic will be the number one seed in the Paris Olympics and the 2024 French Open and Wimbledon winner, Carlos Alcaraz will be seeded second.
