Paris Paralympics 2024: Who are India's medal contenders today September 5 (Day 8)?
India will look to continue its medal winning spree at Paris Paralympics 2024.
India’s historic campaign at Paris Paralympics 2024 continued to write new pages in the record books as they increased their medal tally to 24. Harvinder Singh won India’s first-ever gold in archery at Paralympics/Olympics. He was seeded ninth but dominated his opponents, especially in the finals where he swept his Polish opponent 6-0 to ensure India’s national anthem being played for the fourth time in Paris.
Later in the day, Dharambir added cherry on the cake with a fifth gold medal, He produced a throw of 34.92m in his fifth attempt to win gold in men’s club throw F51. He was joined by compatriot, Pranav Soorma who won silver with a best throw of 34.59. India ended its day with four medals which included two golds.
Earlier, it was a familiar name in the Indian sporting circle that brought fame on Wednesday at Paris Paralympics 2024. Sachin Khilari won the silver medal in the Men’s Shot Put F46 event. He was in line to get the gold medal but defending champion Greg Stewart of Canada produced his season-best performance to retain the title.

India’s medal contenders on Day 8 (September 5) of Paris Paralympics 2024
Siddhartha Babu & Mona Agarwal – R6 Mixed 50m Rifle Prone Event – 1:00 PM
India’s final push for a medal from the Shooting contingent will see Siddhartha Babu and Mona Agarwal in Mixed 50m Rifle Prone SH1 event. Mona has already won a bronze in Paris in the women’s 10m Air Rifle event. But she missed out in the 50m Rifle 3 Position event. The 36-year-old would be eager to make a comeback and win another medal as fighting adversaries is not new to Mona, who overcame Polio and is now taking care of her husband who suffered a brain injury in an accident recently.
She will have a competitor from India, Siddhartha Babu who is representing India in his second Paralympics. The Kerala-born shooter broke the Para Asian Games record last year and would like to repeat it in Paris. India would be hoping to get a medal or a multiple podium finish in the event.
Kapil Parmar – Men’s 60kg J2 – 1:30 PM
The Asian Para Games Silver medalist, Kapil Parmar will be leading India’s charge in the Men’s Judo event in the Paralympics. The World No. 1 Judo Para athlete will be confident of repeating his success from the last few years when he won a Gold in the Alexandria Judo Grand Prix and the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in 2023.
He will take on Venezuela’s Dennis Blanco in the quarters and a couple of wins could seal the deal for the 24-year-old.
Kokila Kaushiklate – Women’s 48kg J2 – 1:30 PM
India will begin its Judo campaign with the young Kokila Kaushiklate battling it out in the Women’s 48kg J2 event. The young Judo player has been making waves ever since she made her international debut. Her first success came in the Commonwealth Judo Championship with a silver medal in 2019.
The Haryana girl stood on the podium with a bronze medal in the Asian Para Games last year. Kokila would be aiming to get a medal in the Paris Paralympics 2024.
Harvinder Singh & Pooja – Mixed Team Recurve Open – 1:50 PM
India will be aiming for its third medal in the Para Archery event during the Mixed Team Recurve category. The duo of Harvinder Singh and Pooja will be aiming to hit the bullseye to ensure they get a medal around their neck.
Harvinder Singh did it on Wednesday winning India’s first gold in Para Archery during the Men’s Individual Recurve event. He will look to repeat the good habits along with his partner Pooja to create history again.
Ashok Malik – Para Powerlifting – Men’s 65kg – 10:05 PM
Ashok will be leading India’s charge in the Para Powerlifting event in the Men’s 65kg category. A nine-time national champion in 12 years, the Haryana man is expected to be on the winners’ list from Paris. Inspired by Bollywood stars to build his body, Ashok has tasted success at the box office.
In the Para Asian Games last year, the powerlifter won the Bronze medal. But it isn’t easy as the previous Asian Games saw him suffer a horrendous injury resulting in his bones breaking and sticking out of his body. Ashok has recovered from it to taste success in Hangzhou and would like to repeat the feat in the French Capital as well.
