India now has secured 15 medals at Paris Paralympics 2024.

India enjoyed a stellar fifth day at the Paris Paralympics 2024, boosting their medal tally to 15 with impressive performances across several events. The country now boasts three golds, five silvers, and seven bronze medals.

Javelin thrower Sumit Antil clinched gold in the F64 category, setting a new Paralympic record. Antil, a two-time World Champion and Asian Para Games gold medalist, has been consistently breaking world records since his Tokyo triumph.

In para badminton, Nitesh Kumar secured gold in the men’s singles SL3 event, while Thulasimathi Murgesan claimed silver in the women’s singles SU5 category. Manisha Ramadass added a bronze in the same event.

Yogesh Kathuniya earned silver in discus throw, and the duo of Rakesh Kumar and Sheetal Devi won India’s second-ever Paralympic medal in para archery.

Suhas Yathiraj settled for silver in men’s singles SL4 badminton, with Sukant Kadam finishing fourth and also Nithya Sre Sivan added bronze Women’ Single SH6.

Number of medals Indian athletes contested on September 2

India’s Paralympic contingent had a stellar performance on Monday, securing eight medals out of 10 events contested across various sports. The country’s medal tally now stands at 15, including three gold, five silver, and seven bronze medals.

Javelin thrower Sumit Antil and para shuttler Nitesh Kumar led the charge, each clinching gold medals for India. Antil set a new Paralympic record in the F64 category, adding to his impressive list of achievements, which includes gold medals at the World Championships in Paris 2023 and Kobe 2024, as well as the Asian Para Games last year.

In para badminton, Nitesh Kumar triumphed over Daniel Bethell of Great Britain in the men’s singles SL3 event. Thulasimathi Murgesan, 22, secured a silver in the women’s singles SU5 category, losing to world champion Yang Qiu Xia from China. Manisha Ramadass contributed to the medal haul with a bronze in the women’s singles SU5 event.

The success extended to other sports as well. Yogesh Kathuniya claimed silver in discus throw, while the duo of Rakesh Kumar and Sheetal Devi won India’s second-ever Paralympic medal in para archery. In the men’s singles SL4 badminton event, Suhas Yathiraj fought his way to a silver medal.

India has now clinched 15 medals, which includes 3 gold, 5 silver, and 7 bronze medals.

Avani Lekhara made history by defending her gold in the women’s 10m air rifle event, becoming the first Indian woman to win back-to-back Paralympic gold. Nitesh Kumar and Sumit Antil also secured gold medals in badminton and javelin throw, respectively.

Silver medalists include Manish Narwal in air pistol, Nishad Kumar in high jump, Yogesh Kathuniya in discus throw, and badminton players Thulasimathi Murugesan and Suhas Yathiraj.

Bronze medals were won by Mona Agarwal in shooting, Preethi Pal in athletics (100m and 200m T35), Rubina Francis in air pistol, Manisha Ramadass in badminton, and the archery mixed team of Sheetal Devi and Rakesh Kumar.

What to expect from Indian contingent on Day 6, September 3?

In para-shooting, all eyes will be on Avani Lekhara, a two-time Paralympic champion, who will compete in the women’s 50m Rifle 3 Position SH1 event. Lekhara, who won bronze in this event at the Tokyo Paralympics, is determined to upgrade her medal this time. Joining her in the competition is Mona Agarwal, who recently secured a bronze in the 10m event.

Meanwhile, in para-archery, Pooja will represent India in the recurve women’s individual competition. She will first compete in the Round of 16, with hopes of advancing through the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and potentially the gold medal match.

India’s strongest medal prospects, however, lie in para-athletics. In the men’s javelin F46 event, there is potential for an Indian sweep and much more.
