Paris Paralympics 2024: India's medal tally after Day 8, September 5

India could only add one medal on day 8 of Paris Paralympics 2024.

The Indian contingent suffered a setback on day 8 of the Paris Paralympics 2024. But it still continued to make history as Kapil Parmar became the first Indian to win a Paralympic medal in Judo. He made sure that the medal winning form continued for the nation by securing bronze in men’s -60kg Judo J1.

Parmar was competing at the Paralympics for the first time at Paris. He started his campaign with a thumping 10-0 win over Marcos Dennis Blanco of Venezuela. The Indian next faced Iranian Seyed Banitaba Khoram and lost 0-10. Khoram went on to win silver in the event. Parmar next faced Elielton de Oliveira of Brazil in the bronze medal playoffs.

Even though the Indian had suffered a devastating loss in the previous match, it did not deter him from dominating Elielton. Parmar won 10-0 by IPPON to secure the nation’s only medal of Day 8 at Paris Paralympics 2024.

The day also saw Simran finishing fourth in women’s 100m T12 as she missed a medal by five hundredth minute of a second. She had recorded her season best of 12.17 seconds to finish first in the heats. During the semifinals, she came in second with a timing of 12.33 seconds, which placed her at the third best timings. In the final, the 24-year-old finished with a timing of 12.31 seconds.

There was yet another fourth-place finish for India on Thursday and that came in heartbreaking fashion in the in the archery mixed recurve team event. Harvinder Singh and Pooja Jatyan lost the bronze medal playoffs against Slovenia. The Indian pair was leading at the start but could not hold on to its momentum.

Number of medals Indian athletes contested on September 5

India could not continue its medal winning spree on day 8 of Paris Paralympics 2024. The athletes contested in five medal events which brought in a single podium finish. The women’s judo saw Kokila’s campaign ending in two painful losses. First she lost the quarterfinals in women’s -48kg J2 judo and then suffered the same fate in repechage round.

Parmar was India’s only medallist on day 8 at Paris. Meanwhile the team of Harvinder Singh/Pooja Jatyan in para-archery and Simran in women’s 100m T12 had close calls. Ashok ended his contention for a medal as he secured sixth place in men’s 65kg powerlifting with a best attempt of 199kg. In the men’s shot put F35, Aravind Malik produced his season best throw of 13.01m in his third attempt, but it was only good enough to finish sixth.

After day 8 at Paris, India has won 25 medals consisting of five golds, nine silvers and 11 bronze medals. Parmar was the lone athlete to make it to the podium on Thursday and his win ensured that India finished in the 16th position in the overall medal tally.

This edition is India’s all-time best performance at the Paralympics yet. The 20-medal barrier has been broken and the nation is nearing the next target.

What to expect from the Indian contingent on Day 9, September 6?

After suffering from a disappointing day, the Indian contingent will look to bounce back on day 9. There will be five medal events contested by Indian athletes on September 6. Dipesh Kumar will start the day off in the men’s Javelin Throw F54 final. Tokyo’s silver medallist, Praveen Kumar will also be in action in men’s high jump T64.

Soman Rana will be in the final of men’s shot F57 while Bhavanaben Ajabaji Chaudhary will compete for a medal in women’s F46 javelin throw. Kasthuri Rajamani will hope for powerlifting history in women’s 67kg.
