India added two medals on day 9.

India had a mixed bag on Day 9 of the Paris Paralympics 2024, adding two medals to their tally while seeing both triumphs and disappointments in various events.

The highlight of the day was high jumper Praveen Kumar’s gold medal in the T64 category. Kumar not only clinched the top spot but also set a new Asian record with a jump of 2.08m. Adding to the medal count, 40-year-old Hokato Hotozhe Sema from Nagaland secured a bronze in men’s shot put F57, throwing a personal best of 14.65 meters.

In track events, visually impaired sprinter Simran showed promise by topping her heat in the 200m T12 category, advancing to the semifinals. However, she had earlier missed out on a medal in the 100m event.

Indian canoers Prachi Yadav and Yash Kumar made it to the semifinals in their respective events, while 19-year-old Dipesh Kumar faced disappointment in the men’s javelin throw F54 final, finishing last.

The 9th day of competition saw India compete for 6 medals across categories. In other events, India suffered some heartbreak. Soman Rana finished fifth in Men’s Shot Put F57 with a best throw of 14.07m, while Dipesh Kumar placed seventh in Men’s Javelin Throw F54 with 26.11m. Bhavanaben Chaudhary came fifth in Women’s Javelin Throw F46 with 39.70m. In Para Powerlifting, Kasthuri Rajamani finished eighth, lifting 106 kg.

What to expect from the Indian contingent on Day 10, September 7?

Indian athletes will take part in several events on September 7 at the Paris Paralympics 2024, looking to boost the nation’s medal tally. Arshad Shaik will compete in the men’s C1-3 road race final, while Jyoti Gaderiya will represent India in the women’s C1-3 road race final.

Both events provide an opportunity for India to secure podium finishes. Later, Yash Kumar will race in the men’s kayak single 200m KL1 semi-final, with hopes of advancing. Prachi Yadav will compete in the women’s Va’a single 200m VL2 semi-final, while para swimmer Suyash Narayan Jadhav will aim for a spot in the men’s 50m butterfly S7 final.
