Paris Paralympics 2024: Updated medal tally after 29th August, Day 1
China leads the medal tally table on the first day of Paris Paralympics 2024.
The Paris Paralympics 2024 has begun with over 25 countries recording podium finishes on the opening day. The 17th edition of the Paralympics had the stage set with a stunning opening ceremony and the sporting events which followed exceeded expectations. Italy had a good start as the nation won the most medals overall with nine podium finishes.
The first medal of the games was secured by 26-year-old para-cyclist Caroline Groot of Netherlands. She won the coveted medal in women’s 500m time trial C4-5 under cycling. Marie Patouillet of host nation France won silver as Kate O’Brien of Canada took bronze. Groot is a decade younger than Patouillet and Kate.
India could not secure medals on the opening day of Paris Paralympics 2024. But para-archers, Sheetal Devi and Rakesh Kumar set a new world record during the ranking rounds of compound mixed team. The duo will now target gold as they have already set the pace.
Zakia Khudadadi won the first-ever Paralympic medal for the Refugee Paralympic Team with a bronze in women’s 47kg K44·Taekwondo.
Updated medal tally after 29th August in Paris Paralympics 2024
The leaders in the medal tally after day one is China with four golds and 1 silver medal. The nation secured two gold medals in Para cycling. Li Zhangyu finished first in men’s C1 3000m individual pursuit while Wang Xiaomei took the honour’s in the women’s event in addition to a world record.

Meanwhile the country saw two gold medals in swimming too. Jiang Yuyan in women’s 50m freestyle S6 and a few minutes later Chen Yi set a world record to take gold in Women’s 50m freestyle S10.
Coming in second place of the medal tally on day one of Paris Paralympics 2024 is Great Britain. The British athletes won two golds, three silvers and 1 bronze. Daphne Schrager won silver in women’s pursuit C1-3·track cycling. 19-year-old Poppy Maskill set a world record while winning gold in women’s 100m butterfly S14. Tully Kearney won the second gold for the nation in women’s 200m freestyle S5.
Italy had a bright start to the games as it won two golds, two silvers and five bronze. Carlotta Gilli started off the proceedings with a gold in women’s 100m butterfly S13 and Francesco Bocciardo followed a similar route in men’s 200m freestyle S5.
Netherlands are placed fourth in the medal tally with two gold medals. Caroline Groot began the campaign in women’s 500m time trial C4-5 under cycling. Tristan Bangma set a world record in qualifying and continued his form to win the men’s B 4000m individual pursuit event.
Hosts France are in fifth place with a gold and two silvers. Ugo Didier won the gold medal in men’s 400m freestyle S9. Alex Portal missed the gold by a whisker as he finished second in men’s 100m butterfly S13.
