Tokyo Olympics Day 6 Report: Deepika Kumari, Pooja Rani fly the Indian flag

The Female athletes had a memorable Wednesday at individual events in the Games.

The events at the ongoing Olympic Games are going by at a rapid pace – with the majority of the indoor events coming to an end. The action is almost never-ending as participants aim to notch up more medals for their nations – with China, the USA, and Japan in a competitive battle at the top and day 6 was similar at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.

For India, Mirabai Chanu remains the only medalist to so far – but the other athletes are doing their best to multiply India’s medal total. On Wednesday, India had a mixed-bag of a day – including some very impressive wins as well as crushing losses. Let’s take a look at what transpired.

Badminton

Indian star shuttler PV Sindhu fueled India’s medal hopes in badminton with a dominant win over Hong Kong’s Cheung Ngan Yi in her final group stage game. She defeated Ngan 21-9, 21-16 to progress to the first elimination round – where Sindhu will face Danish star Mia Blichfeldt.

Meanwhile, in the men’s singles group stage game, Sai Praneeth’s woes continued as he suffered another loss. He fell to a 14-21, 14-21 straight games defeat to the Netherlands’ Mark Caljouw and bowed out of the Olympics in a disappointing fashion.

Boxing

One of India’s Olympic medal contenders, Pooja Rani defeated Ichrak Chaib in dominant fashion in the round of 16 of the women’s middleweight (75kgs) category. She won all three rounds with consecutive 5-0 victories to move into the quarterfinals of the Tokyo Olympics 2020 on day 6.

She is currently one win away from an Olympic medal.

Archery  

The day started in an encouraging fashion for the archers, as Tarundeep Rai mounted an amazing comeback from being 4-2 down to defeat Ukraine’s Oleksii Hunbin 6-4 in the 1/32 round and move into the 1/16 eliminations.

However, he failed to defeat Israel’s Itay Shanny in that encounter – crashing out of the Olympics as a result. His teammate Pravin Jadhav won his game in the 1/32 round in dominant fashion, defeating ROC’s Gaslan Bazarzhapov 6-0!

He was then paired up against the World No.1, USA’s Brady Ellison and was overwhelmed in the 1/16 round tie. Ellison won the game in straight sets (6-0), with Jadhav’s journey at the Tokyo Olympics also coming to an end.

Medal favourite Deepika Kumari was also in action and crushed Bhutan’s Karma in straight sets (6-0) to move into the 1/16 round. She then had a very difficult game against USA’s Jennifer Mucino Fernandez. However, Kumari fought her way to a gritty 6-4 win – moving into the next round which will take place on July 30.

Hockey

The Indian national women’s hockey team have had a disappointing start to their group stages, suffering a 4-1 loss to Great Britain in their third match. They still have two games remaining in their group and will face Ireland as well as South Africa.

Rowing

In a historic semi-finals encounter in the Men’s Rowing Lightweight Double Sculls semi-final, the Indian duo of Arjun Jat and Arvind Singh finished in last place among six participants. As a result, they will now play in the Final B round.

Sailing

In the Men’s Skiff 49er, the Indian duo of K.C. Ganapathy and Varun Thakkar had a day to forget. In Race 2, they finished in 18th position – which was the same as their finish in Race 1. In Race 3, however, they showed glimpses of improvement, but could only manage a 17th position finish.

Things went from bad to worse for the sailors in Race 4, as they finished in 19th position.
