The athlete is receiving praise from across the country after her heroics at the Tokyo Games.
The name of Mirabai Chanu is on the lips of every Indian at the moment. She has brought immense pride to the country after winning the silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Chanu won the silver in the 49kgs women’s weightlifting event. She earned her place on the podium after lifting a total of 202kgs in the competition.
Mirabai Chanu opened India’s account in Japan by winning this edition’s first Olympic medal. As a result of her achievement, the 26-year-old is receiving praise from eminent personalities, political leaders and fans. Adding one more feather to her cap, the Government of Manipur has appointed Chanu as the Additional Superintendent of Police (Sports).
The decision to formally appoint her was announced by the Chief Minister's Secretariat in Imphal on Monday. Furthermore, the state government has also awarded her a sum of Rs 1 crore for her achievements in Japan.
The weightlifter seemed elated after getting the reward. "I want to thank everyone for your support. With your support, today I have received this silver medal in the Olympics. I dedicate my medal to all the people in Manipur," stated Mirabai during her felicitation in Imphal.
Inspiration for masses
Mirabai Chanu is an inspiration for the country and the myriad of female athletes who do not receive ample support in their journey. She also hails from the Northeast of India, which generally does not get enough recognition. Her exploits at the Tokyo Olympics have given the country a glimpse into the depth of talent in the region.
The authorities need to help the budding athletes more and support them in their ambitions. Even in the face of a global pandemic, Padma Shri and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna awardee Chanu did not stop believing.
First Indian to win a medal at the 2020 Olympics
The Indian contingent is hard at work trying to bring home as many Olympic medals as possible. After the first initial days however, only Mirabai has won a medal for India. The rest of the contingent, especially the shooting team, have been underwhelming. There is still a huge chunk of the Olympics left to go and the remaining Indians will hope to emulate Chanu’s incredible achievement.
