The committee has put forth the idea to follow the same schedule as this year although looking at alternatives based on the pandemic situation.

Despite the eventual postponement of the Olympics to be held in Tokyo this year, the organizers for the biggest sporting festival on the planet have decided to majorly superimpose the schedule of the event to be held this year to next year. A start to this could be with the usual torch relay through the length and breadth of the host country prior to the main event.

According to local news source Kyodo News, the organizers plan to host the nationwide torch relay from 25 March next year. The long-run will go through 47 prefectures of Japan and is expected to last 121 days coinciding with the commencement of the Olympics next year.

March 25 was the date set by the organizing committee this year to start the torch run before the showpiece event among many other sporting events was postponed due to the expansive effect of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite doubts being cast over the event happening even the following year owing to the pandemic's unstoppable effect, Kyodo News reports that certain officials are expecting the same schedule to be followed as was to happen this year.

In an email stating the guidelines, the committee stated, "We are continuing to respect the original framework as much as possible while we review how we organise the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Torch Relay." The Olympics is scheduled to be held between July 23 to August 8, 2021.
