Which betting apps are banned under Online Gaming Bill 2025?

Many popular betting apps are banned under the Online Gaming Bill 2025.

The Parliament of India has passed the Online Gaming Bill 2025, which became law on August 22, 2025, after receiving the assent of President Draupadi Murmu.

This landmark law officially bans all online betting and money-based gaming apps in India, including platforms across all sectors such as fantasy sports, card games, and other real-money games.

The bill was introduced by Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in the parliament, who said, “Gaming [addiction] is worse than drugs. Several lives have been lost.”

“Many middle-class families have lost their life’s savings to such platforms, with tragic consequences.”

The new law also strictly prohibits the promotion, facilitation, and advertisement of online money games across any media platform.

Online gaming apps banned in India

The Online Gaming Bill 2025 eliminates the distinction between games of skill and chance, meaning all platforms where users deposit money for potential monetary rewards now fall under the ban.

The following are the applications that come under the ban:

Fantasy Sports Apps:

  • Dream11
  • My11Circle
  • Howzat
  • MyTeam11

Card Games:

  • RummyCircle
  • RummyCulture
  • PokerBaazi
  • Junglee Games

Other Real-Money Gaming Apps:

  • Mobile Premier League (MPL)
  • WinZO
  • Zupee
  • Probo

Not only that, the law also strengthens India’s ability to block foreign-based betting platforms, which were already being monitored. Some of the apps on this blacklist included 1xBet, Betway, Fairplay, Mahadev Book, etc.

There are strict penalties under the Online Gaming 2025 Act. Hosting or operating online money games can attract a jail term of up to 3 years and a fine of Rs 1 crore.

Advertising or promoting banned games through any medium can result in a jail term of up to 2 years and a fine of Rs 50 lakh. In case anyone repeats this offence. Then they will face even harsher punishment, which includes up to 5 years imprisonment and a heavy fine.

Dream11 complies with the law

Meanwhile, following the passage of the Online Gaming Act 2025, the popular fantasy sports app Dream11 issued an official letter announcing that they had stopped all paid contests and pivoted entirely to a free-to-play online social game.

“When we started this journey 18 years ago as a Sports Tech company, we were not even 1% of the size of the USA Fantasy Sports industry,” they said in their public letter.

“Dream11’s Fantasy Sports product was our way to ‘Make Sports Better’ for all of India… We have always been and will always be a law-abiding company…

“While we believe that progressive regulations would have been the right way forward, we will respect the law and fully comply with ‘The Promotion & Regulation of Online Gaming Law, 2025,” the letter reads.
