Bengaluru to get India's second-largest cricket stadium with 60,000 seats

The new stadium will have a seating capacity of 60,000.

The Karnataka government announced a Rs 1,650 crore project to build India’s second-largest cricket stadium along with a world-class sports complex at Surya City, Bommasandra in Bengaluru.

The project was announced on Thursday, August 21, by Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who called it “Bengaluru’s Big Leap into Global Sports!”

The stadium will have a seating capacity of 60,000 and will be built on 75 acres of land. Currently, the Narendra Modi Stadium holds the title of India’s largest stadium, with a capacity of 132,000.

The Bommasandra sports complex will feature both indoor and outdoor arenas, Olympic-sized swimming pools, and advanced training facilities. It will also include a state-of-the-art gym, hostel, guest house, hotel, and convention hall for international events.

This development can be regarded as a step forward in India’s bid to host the Olympics in 2036 and the Commonwealth Games in 2030 by promoting sports facilities.

The public’s reaction has been mixed so far. Some are thrilled, comparing the proposed stadium to world-class facilities like Melbourne Stadium. One of the sports fans said, “Make it happen”.

Others have raised concerns about the location, suggesting that areas like North Bengaluru or Tumkur Road would have better connectivity and attract more investors.

“Sir, Bommasandra is too far; kindly plan either towards North Bengaluru or towards Tumkur road as it will attract more investors and better connectivity,” said one of them.

There are also voices urging the government to first focus on Bengaluru’s basic infrastructure—clean water, proper roads, public transport, and waste management—before investing in a mega stadium.

Apart from this, Ahmedabad is also rapidly expanding its sports infrastructure. The city is developing a sports complex in Naranpura and Gujarat’s first 236-acre Sports City with 10 stadiums for 50 sports.

At the center is the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave, which includes the 132,000-seat Narendra Modi Stadium. These projects aim to transform Ahmedabad into a sports hub and realise India’s dream of hosting the 2036 Summer Olympics.
