India secured the 12th place at the World Transplant Games 2025 with 63 medals.

The World Transplant Games 2025 in Dresden, Germany, drew the curtains on August 24, Sunday with the Indian contingent of 57 transplant athletes returning home with 63 medals.

Athletes from 51 countries came together for a week of friendly competition and celebration across 17 different sports. India finished 12th in the event with 16 gold, 22 silver, and 25 bronze, just ahead of Finland, which won 55 medals including 12 gold.

Great Britain topped the medal table with a huge 403 medals (173 gold, 132 silver, 98 bronze). Germany came second with 206 medals (75 gold, 74 silver, 57 bronze).

This was a big improvement for India compared to the last Games in 2023, when a smaller team of 32 athletes won 35 medals in total.

India have been part of the World Transplant Games since 2011. In the early years, the team had only one or two athletes. By 2019, the team grew to 14 athletes who won 7 medals. Over time, India’s participation and success have kept growing. In 2025, the nation fielded its largest contingent ever at the tournament.

What are the World Transplant Games?

The World Transplant Games are a special international sporting event held every two years. They are organized by the World Transplant Games Federation (WTGF) and are open to organ transplant recipients, living donors, and donor families from all across the globe.

People who take part have all received a life-saving organ transplant such as a heart, liver, lungs, kidney, pancreas, or bone marrow. Because they must take lifelong medicines that can affect their strength and stamina, the Games give them a fair chance to compete in sports and show what they can do.

The first Games were held in 1978 in Portsmouth, England, with about 100 athletes from five countries. Today, the Games include nearly 70 nations and alternate between summer and winter editions.

The events are open to both children and adults, with categories for juniors (ages 5–17) and seniors (18–80+). The Games are not only about sport but also about honoring organ donors and their families, whose kindness makes it all possible.
