Para Shooting World Cup: Rudransh Khandelwal, Mona Agarwal help India finish third in medal tally with 16 medals
India bagged only two gold medals, eight silver and six bronze.
The curtains have closed on the remarkable New Delhi 2024 WSPS Para Shooting World Cup, leaving behind a legacy of sporting excellence, cultural exchange, and heartfelt hospitality. India proudly secured the third position in the medal tally, clinching a total of 16 medals, amidst a vibrant atmosphere of camaraderie and spirited competition.
Rudransh Khandelwal and Mona Agarwal emerged as the torchbearers of the Indian shooting contingent, shining brightly with their remarkable performances. Rudransh’s tally of 4 medals and Mona’s individual gold, coupled with securing a quota for the Paris Paralympics, illuminated the Indian campaign.
China’s dominance was clearly visible at the medal tally. China won total 17 medals with 11 Gold, 2 Silver and 3 bronze. Italy secured the second position with 5 medals that included 3 gold and 2 silver. Athletes from 46 countries, comprising nearly 500 participants, converged in New Delhi, making it India’s grandest para event to date.
Reflecting on the resounding success, Jay Prakash Nautiyal, the Tournament Director, expressed profound satisfaction, “As a Tournament Director, witnessing the overwhelming response from participants has been truly gratifying. From the outset, the task seemed Herculean, but our collective efforts have culminated in a world-class spectacle.”
However, Mr. Nautiyal lamented the shortfall in securing Paris Paralympic quotas, stating, “While celebrating our achievements, it’s imperative to acknowledge areas for improvement. The fact that only nine team quotas have been secured thus far is a sobering realization. We must strive for better.”
Amidst the sporting fervor, the essence of Indian hospitality and cultural richness captivated participants from around the globe. Deepa Malik, President of the Local Organizing Committee, emphasized, “Beyond the medals and accolades, the New Delhi 2024 WSPS Para Shooting World Cup has showcased India’s warmth and diversity. Our rich culture, delectable cuisine, and iconic landmarks like the Taj Mahal have left an indelible impression on all who visited.”
Michael Johnson, a rifle shooter from New Zealand, echoed this sentiment, “I harbored apprehensions before arriving in India, but the experience surpassed all expectations. The playing conditions were impeccable, the weather delightful, and the cuisine exquisite. And the opportunity to visit the Taj Mahal was truly a dream come true.”
