Mohammed Rafi was a good sprinter during his school days and had a late start in football, around 15 years of age. Rafi came through the ranks of SBT and was initially signed up by inaugural champions ATK for Hero ISL 2014, where he was mainly deployed on the wings. He then signed for the Kochi-based side Kerala Blasters in Hero ISL 2015 and scored four goals, all of which were headers. Rafi also scored for them in the final of Hero ISL 2016 which Kerala lost on penalties against ATK. Both his goals for Chennaiyin last season came as a substitute. With seven headed goals to his credit, Rafi is the leading scorer of headed goals in the Hero ISL.
