The Indian shooters have been on song in the tournament so far.
The Indian women won the silver medal in the 50m rifle 3 positions team event at the ongoing ISSF World Cup in Delhi. The Indian players put up a brave fight against eventual gold medalists Poland, but succumbed to the European team by a very close margin of four points, scoring 43 in response to Poland’s 47.
The trio of Anjum Moudgil, Shreya Saksena and Gaayathri Nithyanadam started very brightly, racing to a 9-3 lead after two rounds of shots. It became a 10-point lead after the next round, but all three Polish shooters overwhelmed the Indians in the next round after gaining six points and cutting the lead to four.
Two rounds later, the Poles managed to tie the score at 18, after Aneita Stankiewicz and Natalia Kochanska got the better of Anjum Moudgil and Gaayathri respectively.
They took a two-point lead after the next round, but Moudgil, Saksena and Gaayathri all overwhelmed their opponents in the next series to regain a four-point lead. The Indians then raced to an eight-point advantage before the tide began to change.
The Polish team began to find their rhythm and tied the score at 36 apiece after two more rounds. From there on, the score went 43-41 in the favour of Poland.
Stankiewicz faltered against Moudgil, but Szutko and Kochanska landed their shots perfectly to lead Poland to a well-earned gold medal. Earlier, Indonesia defeated Hungary for the bronze in the same event.
The final of the men’s 50m Rifle 3 positions event had been cancelled earlier in the day. The Hungarian team refused to take part in the final against the host nation. We are still waiting further news in this regard.
